Marks Mi16 Rebuild

Subframe welded. Time to clean down engine bay. I can't get the pressure washer into the garage so it will have to be done by the Armstrong method. It's not too bad though.

Nice Work on the refurb. If you still have subframe out and access to the L arm for gear rods could you confirm length from centre of large bolt head to centre of ball. I've found an arm in box of bits but it seems long

Get the baker bm kit for the pivot, you will not regret it. While it is out too!

I've already got the bronze bushes and a shortend pivot arm for a quick throw. I also have the rose jointed connectin rods.

So are you saying purchase rings to suit 83.5 mm piston so they close up in the in the cylinder then adjust the gap to suit - or when purchasing rings buy "ungapped" instead of gapped.

No, 83.50 would be way too big. You need to determine exactly what the piston to bore clearance is before making any decisions.

Ok going back to previous post of wear measurments. Wear factor was three thou not thirty thou. I have just picked up the engine so pics to follow.

Crank was polished with no machining necessary. I asked for ACL bearings but upon collection I got a "oh they were not available at the time of ordering! " FFS then couldn't you call me? So many business on the gold coast need a good swift kick up the bum. So I'll have a look for some on the net..... I ended up with Glyco bearings - maybe I'll just run with that.

When I measure piston to liner clearance, is it just a case of slipping a feeler gauge down between the two?

I also got some plastigauge to have a play with....

Consider a "B" size piston/liner combination. The largest liner with the smallest piston would be 83.02 - 82.973 = 0.047mm (0.0018"). The smallest liner with the largest piston would be 83.01 - 82.987 = 0.023mm (0.0009"). If you have 0.003", it's outside the acceptable limit but it will still work fine. Mi16 pistons are strutted internally, which means they expand very little as the motor warms up. Clearance cold is basically the same as clearance hot. A clearance of 0.003" would be acceptable for a forged piston of the same size. They will be a tad noisy cold and there will be some blow-by with standard rings. You really need micrometers and/or bore dial gauges to measure the components accurately.

Hi Laurie. Different to mine completely. I took 15mm out of the short side for a lesser throw but longer side is standard.

Thanks Mark mine measures 140mm on the long side? I have heard that an alternative to shortening the short arm is to make long arm longer? I guess I should just try it and see how it feels. Thanks again for measurements.

I have a standard arm to measure if that helps? Nice, will pay attention to this one!

Time for some colour.

..... Thats if Matt black is a colour?

I did the subframe in a primer and black after welding.

Two tone is still a thing right :D

Paint finished, steering rack finished but change of plans with power steering. I'll do the conversion later. Cleaning engine bay now.

I think your lower mount is back to front? Rose joint goes on frame, other bit to lower mount on engine?
