OUT AND ABOUT

There was a 47 Packard that used to attend the concourse events held at Lilydale in the late seventies. All midnight blue and absolutely magnificent. In 48 they lowered the grille height by about half, and totally ruined the dignity of the whole car.

Yes, we did buy the '46 Packard. At $12,000 I couldn't resist.
G'day Bob - - there are a few of us silly ones left.

Attended New Years Day at the old Muckleford school. This is always a good old Australian picnic.

The day after we headed north to Brisbane in our ’92 Nissan patrol TD42 Diesel. It didn’t miss a beat through some beautiful Australian countryside. It’s been 7 years since we moved down and it was great to see the old Qld houses on stumps again in the lush subtropics. We’re so lucky to be in this “lucky country”.

There is a bit of a car Museum in Guyra (I think) where there was black ’72 DS. It was for sale at $50,000.
An H Van coffee van looked pretty good in the Brisbane Mall.

We spotted a great looking maroon Safari on the Centenary Highway coming from Ipswich way.

It was all a bit of - - - “a blast from the past”.

A few days ago Michael and I did some errands in his ’62 Slough Safari and today 27th January, Janet & I went in our '68 Safari for a tea and pie at the Red Beard Bakery in Trentham so slowly - - - life gets back to normal.

All the best to everyone here who “keeps us all going”.

John

Michael's been doing a few swaps - - - some veteran Hupmobile stuff, a 1925 Hupmobile and the 1923 Buick ute for an army series 2 Landrover, a series 2 little ute, a pretty good trayback and some others so we were juggling and loading cars.

Michael decided to swap the 1925 Hupmobile away as he thought it was a bit smoky. I didn;t think it was all that bad.
He;s keeping the 1923 cream Hupmobile as it is quite a good car.

The Citroen C35 van, in the pic, that we had, is still a goer. I try to get Michael to sell it but he says that if he didn't get about $6,000 it wouldn't be worth the bother. They use it sometimes to take an organ to concerts.

The little 1923 Citroen B2 tourer is running a bit funny so Michael's pulling the carbi apart.

that old range rover looks amazing. most seem to be very battered these days (especially the interior). The A/C in them is very good if you get it working. Buttercup Bob hasn't tried to buy the C35 from you? He could have the matching pair :)

I hosed the bird shit and dust off the CX and drove it upto that gathering today. There was good range of cars there, but they were mostly leaving by the time I got there (to hot out already, supposed to be 36 here today).

What it did highlight to me was how little I have drivne a proper car .... it must be 8 years since I've used the CX as a daily driver. The first surprise was ..... They fixed all the buggered roads in ballarat last night. I even started laughing as its so ridiculious .... I drove down one of the worst roads in ballarat and just straight through the worst parts of the worst roads. This is the CX I always said rode very firmly for a proper Citroen. Not a bump ... It just silently floated over the broken up surface :ROFLMAO: I've become used to crappy modern cars so much, I'm even forgetting to complain how crappy they are these days.

I kept thinking the poor old rat infested CX felt flat as a tack .... I did eventually give it a boot ful, and ..... jesus ... I don't remember it being a peaky screamer. She wanted some RPMs on board to go..... I'm obviously used to modern diesels. To think I used to think this car was all down low torque..... These days compared to modern diesels its like a peaky screamer.

Now to get the ID19 back together so I have a selection of proper cars to drive :)

Thanks Shane,
Yes I'm very interested in the C35!
I'd better talk with Michael.....

Went to Lambley nursery just west of Creswick in the 68 Safari. I’d say the place is still up for sale. It was like a celebration of the Safari in such a beautiful place.

What a hot day going to Horsham with Michael to pick up a Series 2 Army Radio Van. The wrecker wanted to swap his 1928 six cylinder Hupmobile for our Armstrong Siddeley which was tempting but it needed too much work to finish it.

Stopped at a pretty big lake this side of Horsham. There was a nice beach and people water skiing - - - probably the Horsham tradies with their toys having time out with the wife and kids - - good fun.

It’s cool today as Michael goes on the last pickup trip. He can then look at what he’s got.

He had his yellow B2 Roadster out the other week so finds it fun to have two B2’s as he acquired the tourer from us in exchange for the Lt 15. Being 1923 they are both 100 years old.

Busy, busy John & Michael.

what are you going to do with old Series II? The stage 1 is the one to get, it has range rover running gear, so you share parts with the other car (and Disco 1's) :) Roger has a Stage 1 single cab with a nice big flat tray on it. it would be a very useful ute (if you could afford to feed it as well as the range rover :ROFLMAO: ). Is that an old Humber sitting next to the ID19?

Hello Shane - - yes it's a rusted Humber Vogue. Michael seems to know what he wants as far as Landrovers go. The Automatic Range Rover has proved to be good at towing at around 2,200 revs.
Good that you took the CX out. I didn't know about that car torque show.
The big one this next Sunday is Picnic at Hanging Rock. I'll try to get the '28 Packard there.

Oh yes, found this B14 ad.

All the best, John

that's cool. does the B14 have vacuum over mechanical brakes somehow? I would have assumed no hydraulic brakes until waaayyy after than was in production!

The B12 is a mystery to me Shane as I don't think I've even seen one.

Hanging Rock Sunday 11th Feb.2024

It’s been a busy weekend. Saturday was the Glenlyon Swap plus show & shine. The 1968 DS Safari was loaded up, ready to go. A Melbourne man was coming up to have a look at our ‘54 Sunbeam Talbot sports car which we have for sale so we also brought that along to this great country setting. The Melbourne enthusiast turned up and knew everything about Alpines, Sunbeam Talbots & so-on. One of the reasons he might not be the buyer is that he is not as slim as he probably was when he had one back in the 1970’s when he owned one in England. The Safari and the Alpine attracted a lot of attention.

Next day, Sunday 11th Feb. was bigger than Ben Hur. Our 1928 Packard Convertible Coupe / Cabriolet was ready with golf bags included ready to go at daybreak. Over just an hour we arrived at “The Rock” with brother Michael arriving soon after in his English 1927 Crossley..
In contrast with many car events, the people coming here are mostly young with the bulk probably coming from Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
As Barry Humphries was known to say, “Sports like footy do well to keep the young busy - - - and out of mischief”’. I think this is relevant in the car movement - - me included. There are many languages spoken when discussing what type of engine might be under the bonnet, horsepower, turbos and so-on. This is the fun of “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, the diversity of the crowd that partake in this huge car event.

There were not a great number of English and European cars there but we did spot a Citroen 2CV and a red D Special.

John

YARRAGLEN BRITISH & EUROPEAN DAY
Sunday 18th Feb.2024

On the Saturday Michael in his 1959 Rover P4 100 and Janet and I in our 1954 Sunbeam Alpine headed for Kinglake to stay the night. From here, on Sunday morning, it was only about 20 minutes for us to arrive at 7.15 am at the yearly Yarraglen British & European car event. Entry was a few minutes later so we were nice and early to set up a small display. By the time we pack things for an overnight stay there isn’t much room left in our classic sports car.
As always it is a big day and there was lots of fun to be had. Hans left Castlemaine early the Sunday morning in his magnificent cream coloured Jaguar Mark 10 - 420G. There were another two Mark ten types.

The grey Safari had an "expressions of interest" ad to maybe sell so I placed that in the for sale column on this site.

John, Janet, brother Michael & younger brother Hans.

PS :- I helped out with a wedding the week before.

KINGSTON SWAP + SHOW & SHINE 24th Feb 2024-02-24

What fun to go cruising through the Goldfields in the 1950 Citroen Big 6 - - - a mighty car arriving at about 8.30 am at the Kingston Showground.
Brother Michael brought his 1950 or so Rover Cyclops and Dale and Junie arrived a little later in the ex Norm Beechey Buick sloper. They have it for sale at around $47,000 after Dale went through it to get it up to an exceptional standard. It is a rare machine with the larger 8 cylinder engine with original twin carbies.

We then went on to Clunes for a coffee enjoying very much - - cruising so effortlessly in the Big 6.

A few more pics.

Also an eight cylinder 1949 Packard turned up at Kingston which was exciting for me as I hadn’t seen this model before. 1947 was the last year of the sixes.

Next day, Sunday 25th February we stopped in at the Daylesford market and onto Trentham in our 1954 Light 15.
As everybody would know - - - it is so important to be driving these old cars as often as is practicable to keep the brakes from seizing up and generally to keep everything in check.
The Light 15, like the Big 6 is a great car - - - just not as comfortable, not as good with suspension as the Big 6 is longer and just that bit more utilitarian.
So much fun to enjoy these wonderful old machines.
John
