The future of aussiefrogs > The Proposal For Keeping aussiefrogs (post#288) > Subscriptions/ Donations Active (post#392) - All threads Merged

you musta missed this, Dan;

WLB, pretty much spot on.

Finding time to even implement a system that will hopefully keep us running is proving tricky but we are nearing a model thanks to help from some key members 👌

Yes my company is in overdraft & i was keeping it as a side hustle but it’s being eaten up by AF fees. We are trying to save for a family project & this is hanging over my head.

When i am asked about costs with re to purchase, alarm bells go off. This isn’t a money making venture & if it were to go that way, the whole feel would change. It may end up a hell of a lot worse than just closing the door, more like disappear. I wouldn’t be able to do anything to save it.

You are most welcome to delete your posts. I can do it with a few clicks instead of individually. Just remember though, your posts will be gone forever either way. I backup each week & if I need to restore, we will only go back to last backup.

Please give me more time. I have lost a lot of sleep over this since I made a decision to shut. It wasn’t easy & still isn’t.

Would you trust a man that has been solely funding this site for 22 years to do the right thing by it's members?

Give the man some space to work this through please. . .

Chris

Of course we should trust @gibgib, it's obvious he's is taking great care in managing and planning the future of the forum.

I think those who have been or are considering deleting their posts need some indication of the plan in a timely way so they neither regret deleting everything only to find the forum continues or find the site locked without the option of modifying content.

You cannot unsay what you have already said. It doesn't work like that. The internet ensures you can't.

What he said.

I have to admit, I've been torn over this. So much so, that I've been gradually deleting my posts. I think I'm one of the longest members on here, joining in July 2000. I'm torn for several reasons. Why would the owner not on-sell the product to someone else? If it's destined to be read-only, why should I be part of it? Then I do a backflip and start commenting again, as I help to share knowledge. I think I've deleted up to 2007. Sorry, it's just me but my compass is regularly reading north-south over this one.
What a strange thing to do. You realise this is the internet?? You don't post anything here thinking you will be able to delete it. If you think anything is deleted so we can't find it .... Just have a look here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20191224111125/http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/index.php

there is dozens of backups of "everything".... everywhere, if you want to look for it. Eg: my webpage hasn't been up for years ... probably not updated for a decade or so.

look at this ... 2008

That's cool, even most of the side tabs work.
Did you finish the DS wagon.😉

I saw my thread on the Faster Floride on that web archive with a discussion with R8philSA about springs. I have no problem with that discussion being available, I never got to meet him or see his car however I have no intention of deleting that thread or any other thread I started.

There is a DS wagon there  ..... maybe you mean my fathers old CX wagon.
My mistake you were going to use the running gear out of the wagon to get the D Special going.

I went back and had a look, the post's still there!!!

on the topic of deleting old posts... The other site I'm on every day, a vintage appliances website based in the USA, locks your post 6 hours after you create it. You only have that 6 hour window to edit or delete. I'm not sure why, but it makes it clear that once you post, it is on the internet forever.
If anyone has privacy concerns about something they have disclosed in a post, maybe delete that bit if you feel safer, but why delete everything? Surely posting advice on how to diagnose some obscure car fault, or a pat on the back to someone for a good restoration, isn't ever going to be a privacy concern? It will certainly be of value into the future.

Why not delete

Because then the information isn't available for the next user who needs it.

If you remove a post with some good technical information, then all you're doing is screwing the next guy looking for that information :(

Just making the point again that I'm happy to contribute. This really is too good a resource and help system to close.

This point has been made repeatedly by members. We're still just as in the dark as when the closing announcement was made (and for years before that) about running costs.
I'm simply bewildered about this whole process.
Everything is closing... but staying live in a static way... but don't despair something else might happen... there's still time etc etc.
If you were explicitly trying to ruin a community, it's certainly a good way to achieve it.

If Aussiefrogs were to close, but with posts still viewable, I would be more than grateful for the years of free access to a forum that I've enjoyed immensely, particularly in my dark days (I have GAD and PTSD). I will miss reading new posts and threads, but there are other forums out there, I have yet to become involved with. The fact that Gibgib has provided us with the forum for so long, and at his own (and sponsors) expense and inconvenience is to be applauded.

The thing that people who write about the automobile dislike is not that people read and quote their work but that it will be edited and changed without their permission. That's why Gordon Miller copyrighted every edition of the Worm Review. So if Aussiefrogs is to survive only as a read only resource material can be safely left there knowing its integrity will be protected. And it will still be the most interesting English language resource on French cars on the net.

Maybe the rejection of your pitch stung but you don’t want to talk down the thing, do you?
With new members joining weekly, it remains a credit to its custodian - and his to make all arrangements for.
