Coming along nicely. Those 'finishing touch' jobs are very satisfying.

Got the donor frame locked in place last night and the bloody welder broke down "BUGGER" this job seems like a never ending story……..
Fitted the windscreen and roof temporarily with very good results this is a game of patience :wink2:

That dashboard restoration is one of my next jobs. I hadn't thought of using an 'Artline silver' pen to touch up the highlights. Is it reasonably robust as a finish?

Good news the roof frame is finally welded in place and considered finished. Sealing seams and painting is next. Believe me it’s a good feeling. But never again:nownow:

The roof is ready for the spray painter will take it on Tuesday one of the brackets has been replaced. I will be using a genuine Citroen roof seal that I’ve had for about 20 years still soft and flexi. I’ve never glued a roof back on before but this is my plan of action I will be using Sikaflex 221 firstly I'll glue the rubber seal around the roof and once dry fit the roof lining and finally put a nice thick bead of Sikaflex right around the roof parameter and bingo making sure to have at least 3 people to guide and push the roof in place. Finally bolt the 5 roof anchor and strap the roof for good measure. I will not use the dress up rubber as Ive been told its almost impossible to fit nicely beside you dont need it if you use the bolt on rubber.

How are the pillar door rubber holders Philipe? I can't imagine you're scared to investigate. They are pretty notorious for disintegrating also around the bottom ends. I'm psyching myself up to repair the bottom sections of doors, figure after stripping them down and patching wasn't good enough so taking out the bad bits and replacing the offendinf sections, the rpelacement sections are thinner than e the original steel unfortunately which makes it more tricky. I would recommend you prep your roof frame with something like KBS rust blast before painting, after getting all the paint off, that stuff is very effective in retarding corrosion. Cheers me up seeing your posts as I have been going around in circles lately trying to refocus on resto!

The apron is completed and needs to be fitted back on the car so that the bumper can also be refitted to accept the guards for alignment as well as all the remaining panels. Check the before and after pictures my panel beater is really good at repairing rust I choose Gris Brumaire AC092 as the main colour light grey non-metallic 2 Pac. looks refreshing with a white roof alpine white.

The roof frame has now been sealed with por15 and should last another 40 years now preparing the front bumper for polishing whilst waiting for the roof to return from the painter.

Well it’s been quite a hot weekend but we managed to fit the roof back on the car. Firstly we glued the seal rubber around the fibro roof and let it dry for about 2 hours using Trex power made by Soudal. Than using Sikaflex 221 we placed a nice 5mm bead around the roof gap and then fitted the roof back on, I must admit the seal rubber made the roof wider and difficult to place into position luckily the roof being fibro is flexible so with a bit of perseverance VOILA she’s in.

Great work Phil - nothing like refitting a nice clean and freshly painted panel.
Well done...!
Cheers,
Mark...:)

Thank you Mark Not a bad finish considering I had to deal with a donor roof and a donor metal roof rail not quite as good as new components and the fact that you can’t buy the original rubber seal for glued roof does not make the job easier but using the rubber seal for a screwed type roof is possible a little tricky but produces a reasonable finish and you don’t need to use the dress up rubber and the roof is nicely secured with the 5 roof clamps. Friday afternoon I will fit the new windscreen with new rubbers.

In the mean time the panel beater is fighting the rust and believe me there is a lot of it the passenger side front and back doors needs patches on both sides this guy is pretty good at rust repair old school kind of the guy. The soda blasting did distort the front guards I gave him the glass as guides and likely he checked them they were way out. Smart move

Hi Phillipe,

Your work is wonderful. Your D Special is going to look wonderful and be kept on the roads for many years to come. I am amazed at your skill set and work ethic. I hope one day, I can a tenth of the work that you and the others do.

Cheers, Syd

Hi gsowner84
I will admit I’m determinate and eager to complete this Dspecial and this is definitely the last one my health isn’t the best and this time I’m struggling with it, I’m plaining to use this car when I retire not far to go now.
I’m very fortunate to have my son helping me to complete this project he is a real Citroen enthousiast, I must thank you for your kind words they are definitely encouraging and remember if I can do this kind of work believe me so can you it’s only a Dspecial the simplest car fitted with carburettor and dizzy the easiest to maintain and possibly the model that will outlive all the other models.
Cheers
Philippe
