Xm - head gasket job

some more xm porn for motorgnome.
the xm that got us into them.
built 92. compliance plate in aus 94. series 1. australian delivered.
has a special interior it seems.
the compliance plate has had the built date removed from the bottom of it.
looks like either factory or aus distributor modified the plate to remove the build date.
it was put on the road here just before the introduction of the series 2.

No, the key/plip is only to lock/unlock the car, while the ECU is locked/unlocked by a code on the keypad. In some cases it is possible to have the car in a state that does not require the use of the keypad every time. Many people have replaced the original plip with an aftermarket remote as the cars age. If there is a fault with the key, it would likely be the ignition switch behind it or even a bad connection in some other part of the car.

That's obviously a custom leather trim job and looking very attractive. If you look it up, it may well show it was built with cloth trim and so the leather might have helped sell it??? It coud have sat in a bond store without a compliance plate for quite a while.

For the grey plastic trim, it's not originally painted and needs something to bring it back in old age. 303 looks great until it rains, so you need a trim dye in grey not black. If it was black, Forever Black would be a good choice, but you need grey. Plasticare, which was excellent and from the UK, seems to have vanished from ebay. Looking for Plasticare, I found this from the UK:
https://www.205gtidrivers.com/forums/topic/165384-where-to-get-plasticare-bumper-dye/
and they mention a product from Autobright and suggest you can get a grey version. However, Wurth may be the go to here.

thanks david, you are right.
guess we were thinking of xantias which in later models came with a transponder key?
the issue seems to be key related as the symptoms do not occur using the spare key.
even shaking or wiggling the key cannot produce the shut down.
we will flip back to using the bigger fob key and see if the symptoms come back.
perhaps its something as bizarre as a worn key able to shake or move in the lock cylinder?

meanwhile we have ordered in a new accumulator sphere as the main pump is working hard.
the rear of the car tends to sink fairly quickly after shutting down.

also having conquered all our minor oil leaks a new one has emerged after a couple of weeks of driving that was not there before.
looks to be coming out of bottom of distributor housing.
camshaft seal must have not quite seated or sealed.
have to get the distributor off i guess next time at workshop and take a peek.
bit of a pain if it is that.

did a full coolant flush out yesterday.
so now our coolant is all fresh and clean.

slowly slowly chase the monkey.

A 1995 promo video you may enjoy (and relate to) ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a72EXZ-qamc
Maybe you want to re-enact it?

Not to forget the original promo with the 24 Valve in Iceland ... with horses, birds, volcanic eruptions, some gratuitous circle work by a waterfall and much more.

Desperate times means desperate measures...

The outer skin on both mufflers was rusted, & not being able to find anything to replace it with, I decided to "re-skin" it. You can see the original outer of the centre muffler sitting there. The exhaust wasn't leaking, as the mufflers have an inner "skin", but it looked terrible & my poor brain couldn't cope with it.

I'll do the rear muffler tonight.

No need. They are fine without that outer skin. Cut it all away and leave the inner muffler. I've had rear mufflers like that for pushing 10 years and they are fine. Walker do make replacement mufflers if you need to replace them. If the baffles inside collapse, that's a different problem.

They also offer the front muffler behind the cat.

A full set of spheres for mine too. (already fitted the accumulator sphere)
Incidentally, the spheres that I removed from the car were "bodgy".. The numbers translate to DS/CX rear & BX GTI front...I guessing the Hydractive will be needing work after seeing this (they have gone for softer spheres)

Walker is not just a local business. Internationally, I expect they remain producing parts for the XM.
Look at CTA - I think this will show you the Y3 PRV exhaust components:
Citroën XM Break (Y3) 3.0 V6 (SFZ (ZPJ/Z)) 199111 - 199404 | CTA Service
They freighted the front muffler for around 50 Euro freight with a few other odds and ends. The problem part is the intermediate rear muffler as it is an odd shape and quite large.
Repair as best you can what you have I guess.

Yes..That centre muffler would make for a big freight charge...99% of what I buy for the XM has come from overseas ( I got rear disc rotors & plug leads in Australia!), but freight on that centre muffler would be horrific!...Like you said..repair is the best option right now...It'll probably last another 10 years anyway!

great stuff motorgnome.
love photo with the front off the car and engine hanging there.
a big job alright.
parts are getting hard and the parts shops here are closing.
but i guess we will all manage.

thanks for the film clip david. a different world back then. the video seems like its the late 80s trying to anticipate the 90s yet to come.
which did not turn out quite as the film clip imagined. the story of the xm. fabulous.

degasser pots are unobtainium now for the late series V6. answer = make one?

Good work Wonki!.. Hahaha.. It's funny calling you that..

Citroen's make you think outside the square huh.. I'm a mechanic & am used to just ordering the part & putting it on.. Not so easy with these cars huh.

In regards to that video... a video came up after that one finished, about the release of the XM.. I didn't have time to watch that one, (13 minutes long?) but I'll be on it soon as I can!

You have to plan ahead for most items on these cars now.

That video was for the facelift models, which arrived in 1994.
Interestingly, it looks to have been filmed in the USA. Brooklyn Bridge? Streets of San Fran? and USA Today ...

we are going to need a new hydraulic pump pulley for the green xm.
the pulley that is bolted to the end of the rear head camshaft and drives the belt to the pump.
don't suppose anyone has one?
have done some searching on the net and can't seem to come up with one anywhere.

Possibly, but you could ask Rally as he has an XM PRV engine to fit into a Pug and probably won't need that pulley. Martin Bray?

Why would a PRV engine in a Pug have that pulley on what would be the rear of the engine?
