Dealers have mechanics...? Huh. Who knew... All the dealer experiences I've had have been horrible and usually involve more work from me to tidy up/rectity/redo the "work" done...

Dealers are for big warranty claims only where its expensive enough to roll the dice on them doing a horrible job. Minor warranty issues save yourself the brain damage and just fix them yourself.

Out of warranty work? lol...

If you dont turn your own spanners, you really should be in a Hyundai... Australia is a redneck backwater and the average aussie mechanic does not have the right knowledge or more importantly attitude to deal with french or italian etc cars. And the official support is even worse from importers.

Frog mobiles are for enthusiasts or those lucky enough to find one of the very very very very very few tame mechanics willing to do the work properly.

You also under-estimate Hyundais. French cars are no more complex, and all makes have their ways of designing things.

One small observation of mine is that work done by young apprentices should be supervised. That applies to dealers and non-dealers, but the bad jobs that I have had over many years were in shops with several apprentices that also ruthlessly exclude customers from even observing. They were dealers. I can't think of one that doesn't chase customers away or seclude them.

One of the skilful mechanic tradesmen I have been involved with, unfortunately now retired and his business sold, would encourage customers to hang around and drink coffees or beers in the the workshop and watch and yack while the work was done. It sounds like a recipe for trouble but it suited him, and it built up huge customer loyalty. Few stayed for the whole of long jobs. Every week at the end of work the place was cleaned and opened up for socialising with customers and local related trades.

My comment wasnt one about the product itself, it was the support the manufacture provides and the attitude of those on the ground. Hyundais are accepted as being "proper" cars in the trade whereas frog stuff is "weird expensive French shit". And Hyundai (or toyota or a couple of other brands) as a company have a much stronger focus on customer care and satisfaction.

So you’re in the trade are you

Well you seem to be pretty across the thoughts of people in the trade but hey I guess an environmental scientist is a made up job anyway just like your facts.

Surely no one believes that any particular modern brand or make of car is really any different to the next one? Between the platform sharing, off the shelf components and sealed for life components there can't be much in it for general servicing.

The trouble begins when you actually have an older and rarer car

Pretty much. Its mostly down to customer support and attitudes. Every make and model will have some particular quirk or weak point, but all the mass produced cars are much of a muchness for reliability - with some variances of course, although variances can be just as much between models in a brand as it is between brands.

My main issues with dealers have just been really sloppy and rough work. You know, little things like shit literally falling off the car driving it home ;)

I remembered long time ago I had my car in a panel beater ( not Peugeot my previous Japanese ) they drove my car and parked my car illegally and I got a ticket weeks later - a suburb that I have never been to ever in my life here. This panel beater parked it on a Stop sign was a large fine and I checked my records and saw my car was still in the panel beaters being repair ( these jobs takes weeks if not months ) nobody leave a car in panel beater for one afternoon - esp an insurance job. I sent it to the then RTA in NSW and they sent it to the panel beaters and the panel beaters denies it and send it back to RTA and RTA then palm it off to me saying I am ultimately responsible as I am the owner as they are not convinced panel beaters or car service would drive customer car to a suburb some 30 kilometres away. There you go--- being good and honest gets you nowhere in life. And that's why good girls go to heaven and bad girls go to London Paris and Madrid- so to speak.

Alfa is going in for a warranty replacement alternator (Denso for the record!) soon... Wish me luck! Big job, AC compressor has to come out first :(

The new head tech they have there seems pretty good though (there are always exceptions to rules ;) ), i just hope its him doing the work and not one of the apprentices....

I once had an Audi A3 that required a full engine rebuild under warranty.... I bet there wasn't much care put into that job. I sold the car soon after, with full disclosure to the buyer of course.

Happy to report to members this most recent service post thread creation was - nothing short of delight - despite doing tried and tested in the past - and so continuation and did not exceed the coin in the bag. So despite members coming up with so many wonderful recommendations, one was better off going to the one right underneath one's nose this whole time!

One member mentioned continental as wonderful as a circus in town - well after speaking with them over the phone, they were the circus itself. Did not expect to speak to a clown. It was a pure waste of oxygen- none the wiser like speaking to Inchcape call centre.
