R8 upgrade project

Time I got the car back on the road as the gearbox all of a sudden became noisy.

Was theorizing input shaft bearing.

What a fun job, it's like the entire car is now built around that bearing.

Back off, engine out, gearbox out and stripped. Damn fith gear 32mm speedo drive open end spanner was required that needed to be thinned down on the grinder.

And yes the case hardening has disintegrated off the rollers in the bearing.

It's about time you made an appearance Brett [emoji16]
Gee, I'm completely shocked the gearbox hasn't held up.... not!
Any thoughts on a solution to keep up with the engine?

Good to see you still have the Dauph [emoji6]

NASA inspired heat wrapping!

Work of art Brett.

I’m pretty sure he said he is keeping the Dauph for me

So plenty been happening.

Air to air intercooler gone. New water to air intercooler now, makes sense in a rear engine car.

New front mount intercooler radiator to go with it.

New Deatschworks 555cc matched set of injectors.

Adding a twin pump surge tank into the rear compartment. Walbro 255's.

Make a snazzy bracket to fit the unit on the rear cross member.

New engine mounts from a Nissan Micra k11 model.

Getting ready for alot more boost.

And this was the input shaft bearing...

that looks like your moneys worth alright.

OK, so more torque on the way. Would a gearbox cooler help the gearbox internals survive a little longer?. Worked for Porsche at Le Mans in the early days before they built bigger boxes.

You are probably already making the fittings and the pump is on the way.

Just to clarify, I know that input shaft has no signs of excessive heat, I was thinking more in terms of more volume of oil with some spray bars to direct oil to where its needed. That pitting on the input bearing shaft looks nasty.

Hey Chris,

When I had the Ca18det in the car I had some problems with the hydro centre release bearing, you would let go of the clutch and nothing, then all of a sudden whack. Same as side stepping the clutch.

That bearing you could actually see individual needle roller imprints in the race. Like it had them hammered in on the one place. That's obviously the main failure cause. Nothing to do with the supercharger or driving style, obviously.

Also Steve swan would be guilty as the same as the rest of us for putting in the used bearing with 100k on it already. They look and feel great.

If you've raced bikes you know that a bearing with even the slightest marks, just colour, will fail when loaded up for a while.

All the other bearings felt great but had colour. I just turned a blind eye and reassembled it!

For boost I'm going to put on a turbo and blow through the supercharger to twincharge it. It will compound boost.

Throttle body stays where it is. And I'll use the gfb boost controller and a blow off valve to limit total boost to about 22psi.

Before the new intercooler max boost on a cold day was around 12-14psi.

Engine is 8.3:1 so I think if the charge temp is under control then 22psi should be fine.

I can use a second water to air intercooler cooling on the same circuit.

The water / meth injection will help too.

Then there's the crankshaft, but I'm sure the Renault engineers forsaw twincharging on an 807 so I feel confident about that.

This is another pic of it, you can clearly see the momentary needle imprints...

That would have quickly started its demise.

Sounds like a cool launch control feature Brett :D

Hi Bret
You might find the roller marks relate to the number or spline teeth , this is the weakness when transmitting significant extra power.
On the UN 1 gearboxes Albuns make a single piece input shaft and cluster to upgrade the power upgrade to 400hp.
May be worth looking at for the 330 transaxle for your application
