I was wondering if anyone knows of someone around the Brisbane area who has mechanical knowledge of peugeot 404 injections. I have recently restarted a peugeot 404 injection that has been stored for 10 years. I went though a few preparatory steps before starting (changing all fluids, filters, lubricating the upper cylinders, turning the engine over without spark plugs in, etc.). The car is now runing but making some strange noises. I'd like to run it for a good 10 minutes but I'm a little worried that the noise is something more serious so haven't run it very long yet.

Any contacts who could help here would be most appreciated.

Hi Mike and Julian.

Yes, topped up the injection pump oil.

Not really sure how to describe the noise, but maybe best to upload a video of the engine running. It's not blowing smoke.

The car is a 1964 404 cabriolet injection, serial number 4593350, engine 6800736

Wow that is news! Another Cabriolet in Australia! Do you have a photo?

The engine is a KF2 from a 1967 404C, 96 HP. I once put an inexpensively reassembled 404C engine from Cabriolet 6800519 into a sedan 4326224. It should not be super difficult to troubleshoot if I can see a video and hear it.

After I mis-spelled "noise" I do hope that you can post a video, as I'd like to assist. And know more about the car's history.....

Here's a video I took if it helps... I hope it's not terrible news.

I bought the car while living in Paris in 2002 and shipped it over and has been in Brisbane since. I'll post an image.

That sound would not be coming from the injection system. From what I can hear it's running well on all 4 cylinders. Was it running well when it was put away? It almost sounds like a rattle. In any case, a decent local mechanic should be able to deal with that. Link to the Injection workshop manual - scroll down a bit to find it, it's broken up into bits due to file size:

If you could let me know the "carrosserie Peugeot" number on the stencil-like plate below the VIN plate, it would complete the info on this beautiful car for the Register. May I use one of the photos for Le Club 404's website?

Someone who is familiar with the use of an automotive stethoscope would find the source of that noise in about two minutes.

Hi Mike, I'll send you a picture of the carrosserie Peugeot number and please feel free to use an image for Le Club 404 website.

I've just asked a contact of mine in QLD to have a look at this thread and maybe offer some help or advice. Being in British Columbia I'm not a lot of help.

Thanks for all the info and I'm sure it's fixable. Spectacular car!

Have you a good long screw driver? Bone conduction to your head from various points of the engine that aren’t moving too much can help hone in on where things may be amiss …

That is a worrying noise BruceB,I would first check oil pressure, assuming you have filled engine oil to correct level, next would be crankshaft pulley for tightness/keyway wear.next would be rocker cover off to make sure no valves are sticking open due to standing for a long period some valves would have been in open position and may have rust on valve stems open to air in ports, this may cause pistons to touch valve heads…just a couple of thoughts ..jim

Unfortunately the carroserie plate is missing so unless it's to be found somewhere else on the car I'm afraid I can't provide this information.

The car was running fine until it was garaged in 2007. It was started again in 2009 (running less well) but hasn't been started since. So it's actually been sitting for 14 years. It always suffered from rust in the fuel tank, so prior to restarting this time I pulled the tank out and did a fuel tank rust restoration. I also used an acetone fuel line clearer to clear out sediment in the lower fuel lines. But none of this should explain the noise.

The car is booked into a Brisbane french car specialist workshop in about 6 weeks to look at the brakes and ideally get a road worthy certificate. The source of the engine rattle might slow this process down. Was hoping to have it driving before I have to return to Scandinavia in some months.

Sad, but probable the car will be sold since I now live on the other side of the world.

Thanks for the suggestions Jim
