macquered's Grandfather's DS Cabriolet Delivery

Not necessarily so, of course it would be dependant on how bad the rust, but given restored examples can change hands for in excess of $125,000, you have $100,000 to spend before taking a loss....if you gave yourself say 10 years to restore, that figure could only improve.. should still be a very viable and worthwhile project... :2cents:

Yeah depends entirely on the rust. If your paying someone really good (eg: Andre Pol) it wouldn't surprise me if the bills added upto 100,000bux. After all to be worth decent $$$ when finished it would have to be done "right".

Driving the 2cv around on a sunny day has put me off the idea of ever owning a convertible. Even a 2cv with the roof rolled back isn't a nice place to be on a sunny/warm day (talk about heat stroke  ).

Depends on how rusty it was. If it's as rusty as I'm thinking I probably would have hesitated even if the price was $5000bux..... The cost of repair panels for the cabrio's is horendous. They would be very hard for a person without specialist equipment to repair without them sagging in the middle (remember there's not roof there to strenghten the rusty structure, I've seen several photo's of them bent in the middle).

The Chapron Cabrio's used the DS station wagon as the donor chassis/ subframe. If I cant recall too much body or scuttle flex in the one I found in Santa Cruz (the construction & ridgitity reminded me a lot of an an MGA).

It sold for USD$25K in 1990 to an aussie I tipped off. He got a great deal on shipping it to Perth, a bit of marine backloading, then the lucky bugga drove it to the east coast across the Nullabor. It didnt miss a beat - Perth Melb Brisbane. Now thats what I call a road trip!!! :D

Interesting, do you know if the car is still in Queensland, and who owns it?? Is it the car seen at Citin Maleny??

Cheers
Chris

Yes, Chris, it is the one now owned by Ian Steele and shown at Maleny, having recently been repainted in a colour close to what I think it may have been originally.

I was a white one -( 2nd nose I think) LHD, although I have lost touch with it, I believe its still in QLD somewhere.
The guy who sold it had got a complete extra set of everything 'Chapron" a new spare of every special badge /bit of trim etc (even new spare Chapron softtop). I hope it was all sold with the car.
When I found it, it was under a tarp, in his factory. & hadnt been started for 4/5 months. We primed the petrol pump and it cranked over slowly & fired up then rose.
So we went cruising around Santa Cruz in the Chapron.

Cheers

Woops - I may have got it wrong then.
This car came to Aus from the USA via Perth and was then driven to Brisbane, but it was a bronze colour before the respray, definitely not white.
Before the respray the dash had a blue painted section, somewhat like the colour the car is now.
Can't tell you the colour name - Ian was going to use a Ford colour if I recall correctly, but after it had had a coat and he saw the car in daylight he changed his mind - don't know what he ended up with.

I fielded a couple of phone calls from Les and Peter while driving to Cooma last Friday night. They now know how to get onto AF and I believe are reading all the stuff we have posted about various cars. They will be in touch with Brendan re getting some copies of pics of the car and some more history information.

It's times like this that the 'net really shows how useful it can be.

who was that mystery driver???

and the lucky bugger who drove it home was David gries and son...Citroen buff and 2CV whizz!! ....I believe he had first option on it but opted for a house extension instead....sell the kids i reckon!!! :D
