macquered's Grandfather's DS Cabriolet Delivery

Oh thats beautiful! It really is nice to see that it is still in immaculate condition. I'm speechless.

Thanks for chasing it up Craig. I'll speak to you later about an article for the magazine. :)

To put it simply, you do not get away from the Hazzeyhuths in under 8 hours. We spent about 4 hours in La Maison De Citroën. There are some truly beautiful cars there, and some truly mad CitNutters.

What's the story here?
At the time it was bought by Les & Peter, the story they told was that it used to belong to the late brother of a late PM. From memory it only had around 14,000 miles on the clock.
Do we have "Royal blood" in our midst with Macquered??

No, I think Sir GB of BrisVegas holds the only bloodline here!!

Look at the DS Cab in Toorak thread for more information and early pics of the same car.

And talk about a late PM - they're still waiting for him to come back for afternoon tea :headbang::joker:

After a quick search of my copy of the sales ledgers, the car was sold to TA Holt (A/C McPhail), address "Tundara", Bethungra, on 18/10/68, for $9485. The colours were listed as aqua and natural. As a comparison, a DS21H was sold in July that year for $5476, and a Safari in early '69 was $6223.

So it was not a cheap car. :wink2:

Paul

Thanks for the details Paul. I just spoke to old mate g'pa (who resides on a cattle farm in Yandina, BTW) and he was surprised to learn of the sale details, and that the car is not too far away from him.

Is this collection of vehicles open publically or is it a private collection?

By my rough calculations (using a '68 Kingswood and an '05 Commodore as a reference) the purchase price of this car would be about $120K these days.

Also, he says that Tom wasn't a brother of Harold. He did have a brother that also drove Citroens, but not a famous one.

The only famous connection I can think of is that he serviced the DS belonging to Jorn Utzon, the Sydney Opera House architect.

Jorn apparently still drives an old Citroen back in his homeland. What is it with ageing architects and old Citroens?? :roflmao:

In one of the Bonhams and Goodman (IIRC) ads in the front of Australian Classic Car there was an ad for a DS21 'vert that sold for $130,000+

Dunno if that's representative of what they're worth, though. I can scan the ad if people are interested.

EDIT: just read Macquered's post. Seems $130,000 is representative.

That was possibly the car that Rene Rivkin had.......shows you what owning old Cits can do to ya.

It was. I looked at it when it was on display at Auction time. :D
The car was good, a successfull Auction Item for the vendors.

So long as the Citroen brings joy to those around, all is well in the universe.

DS cabrio being restored in Vic

If anyone is interested in seeing a cabrio being restored then pop over to Heka in Dandenong...might be an idea to ring first to make sure it's ok...
AFAIK it was bought in california and is being extensively restored for a well know fashion industry person....I'm not naming them for privacy reasons!
roughly two years ago I was offered a very nice cabrio from Canada for $55 k aust...am I kicking myself now!!!!!!!!

Just as a rough guide to prices, a real genuine Henri Chapron decapotable DS, sold in late 2003 at southebys auction house in London, for £65,000, or AU$ 157,400. ( sorry dogboy, I think you may have to up your bid a little!)

Hi John....let's remember that Chaprons fetch a premium over the usine versions...that said the rene Rivkin one was from the New caledonia and was converted from LHD to RHD...LHD examples do not seem to fetch as much
I did a lot of research and web trawling to find the canadian cabrio and yes I was a fool not to buy it...but even for me it was a lot of money and I had only seen photos (which looked good)...
Just to make everyone feel better I know of a cabrio that was bought not more than a year ago for less than $25,000 rusty yes..but all there and no...not an urban legend!
Luck and perseverence all play a part in finding bargains but you have to be committed !! Now if i was earning UK pounds $65,000 uk wouldn't be much at all

Depends on how rusty it was. If it's as rusty as I'm thinking I probably would have hesitated even if the price was $5000bux..... The cost of repair panels for the cabrio's is horendous. They would be very hard for a person without specialist equipment to repair without them sagging in the middle (remember there's not roof there to strenghten the rusty structure, I've seen several photo's of them bent in the middle).

you're right Shane...I think one would have to make a jig up to keep it all together and it would probably only make sense if you had the skills and time to do it yourself...

Not necessarily so, of course it would be dependant on how bad the rust, but given restored examples can change hands for in excess of $125,000, you have $100,000 to spend before taking a loss....if you gave yourself say 10 years to restore, that figure could only improve.. should still be a very viable and worthwhile project... :2cents:

Cheers
Chris
