Just don't mention the war..

A study in chassis design..

I don't know much about early Renault chassis but this one should have had a transverse rear spring setup shouldnit? On this example there seems to be some sort of outrigger in placed to allow for regular cart springs. Russell and Sebastian can't quite fathom it either.

The springs on this are 3/4 elliptic, which was a popular arrangement on quality cars of the era ( RR Silver Ghost had them until change to cantilevers in 1912-1913)

Not a common arrangement since then, so this may allow progress in identification - it may have been "as designed"

And yet another Aussie prewar Renault.. This must be the type A that JW alluded too elsewhere.. https://thewest.com.au/lifestyle/motoring/revolutionary-little-beauty-ng-b88600439z

Yup. Perhaps best, if unfairly described (my words) as a De Dion tricycle with a back axle and an overgrown lathe gearbox. It's one of perhaps 5 or 6 of the first Renault model surviving anywhere on the planet - a 1898 Type A. It's pre-Boer war too......

I've ridden on it (on not in) and it's due home soon! Regarding the photo, I really wanted to get a Scenic there too, so we had a whole century of passenger car evolution by Renault. But you get me instead of the Scenic....

16/20 Renault.

The Lithgow riot and bosses burnt out prized Renault.

1911 Lithgow Riot

The text says that it WAS a brand new Renault 16/20 which suggests it was probably a 1910 manufacture and imported and registered in 1911 and even then it was general knowledge that Renault owners loved their motor cars.:D

Ah, what a weekend that was! According to my photos, that car is a Type CE, I think 1913 vintage. It was bought originally by a coal mine owner in the north of England, and sold by the family, if I recall, in about 1947. After several owners it was purchased in France and returned there in recent years. I travelled to the event in the car. Quite an experience!

I suspect too big for an NN but a lovely car. Look at the size of the front brake drums!

Hi,
You would be pretty shagged out after 12 hours of that....

Andy

They ran it over two consecutive days I seem to remember. There's a great photo of Szisz with a wet towel over his face at the end, burning with tar fragments etc.

One major contribution to their victory was Michelin's detachable rims.

The cars are all lost, but Renault has a good running replica and one GP engine can be found in London's Science Museum. If the label posted is readable, you'll see it might have been used subsequently on an airship.
