Well it "was" a DS at one stage!

No worries about that one, irsa. There was a very specific reason for that.

That's actually quite civilised parking compared to Rome......They park on the footpath, across Zebra crossings and if they can't fit into a space longways they just park sideways with the front wheels up on the footpath.

It is the Michelin PLR made from the body of an ID20 Estate. It has:

  • 10 HY (H van) wheels
  • one Chev 5.7 l V8 driving the rear axles from a Peugeot 504 through an automatic GM 'box
  • the second Chev V8 drives the truck tyre testing unit suspended in the middle of the vehicle
  • two ~85 litre fuel tanks
  • DS disc and HY drum brakes
  • top speed of 110 mph (~ 175km/h)
  • DS steering
  • Aluminium DS bonnet

It weighs about 9 tonne, is nearly 8 metres long and about 2.5 metres wide (soft as a downy chick......)

It is rarely used these days. Some of us saw it at the DS Jubilee in 2005. No it did not do the tour around Paris!

My late friend Helen was there when they pulled the cover off that car.
Was exciting to hear the tale, and to this day the thought of it makes what hair I have left stand on end.

How cool. Ive never seen colour images of this before. Has anyone found anything of the actual moment the unveiling took place with covers being taken off? Film? Maybe I'm wishing with modern eyes, where everyone has a camera in their pocket!

Here's an interesting before and after...

"From my reckoning it is an early Slough built car, really early, as the centre exhaust was only for the first few years. Also another interesting point is the number plate G1. The G & single digit cars were for official Glasgow city Council dignitaries, even today Glasgow's Lord Provost (our equivalent to a Mayor) smokes around in a VW Pheaton wearing G0 plate. Reg transfers has G1 valued at just £825000! Wonder how much G0 is worth. The council must have sold off their other plates at some point."

"One of the last French steam locomotives, the iconic streamlined 4-6-4 no 232U1 known as 'La Divine', is paced by another wheeled icon of French style, a Citroën DS. 'DS' is pronounced 'Déesse' in French, which means 'goddess'. Apart from his invisible exhaust, the DS driver is adding his pipe smoke to the evocative, odourous output of the locomotive."
