Peugeot engine type

Taking to Bruce llewellyn, he suggested that it could be 1400CC engine. That is why the engine number looks different and not those listed in the info I posted. Not sure how to confirm this?
No way it is 1400cc , it is either XC-6 1600cc (the original 404 type for this model) or 504 XM 1600 or 1800 (as Mike suggested) type adapted to 404.
Isnt there a way to find the engine type by the number I found ? Or Should also be a type number somewhere on the engine as well?

I JUST SENT THANOS A HEADS UP ,SEE WHAT HAPPENS ,CANT BE TOO MANY JACKS IN ATHENS SURELY

1468 cc 404/8 but probably not. With the head gasket removed and a ruler across the bore plus a photo we will know what it is.

Excuse my ignorance but isn’t it a 1600cc head when there 3bolt inlet manifold?
4 bolt is a 1800cc?

Looks early to me I’d say it’s a 1600.

What gearbox is behind it?

Graham aren’t the 1400cc the same as a 403 type engine? Not a XN style?

As graham said ruler along the top of the bores will indicate the diameter. = answer.

From memory 88mm is 2litre
86-87?mm was 1800,
If 1 or 2mm smaller than that it’s a 1600

Correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks BP

1800 is 84 same as 1600. Longer stroke 81 mm. 1468 is just a 404 engine with 80mm liners.

I managed to find this engine type indentification list for 504 , based on my number on camshaft that reads M 20402 TA ,
the last 2 letters TA give the engine type, however T exists but not TA , maybe its a later engine type (not listed here?)
Any ideas?

As per my previous post, the engine type is cast into the top of the head, near the valve springs. What does it say?

The single throat Solex and 3 bolt/hole manifold looks very much like a 404 head. Did not the 1800 504 have a 4 bolt/hole manifold.
As Graham has said. a photo showing a rule measuring the bore width would be a great help.
Being above my pay scale, is it possible to bolt a 404 head on 504 block? I would have thought not...

Yes, the 504 1800 had four bolts on the inlet manifold. At least, any that I've seen.

Also the photo would show what liners it has. After 1970 404s had 2 litre style blocks and liners. You can fit a 404 head to 2 litre.

Thinking aloud again, it has to be a 404 or 1800 504 (?). My thinking is, the the block has a solid/enclosed surface, do not the 2LTR engines have a open top end and the cyllinder liners have flat spot on the sides to help locate and keep them in place with the head holding then firm and in place.
