Peugeot 205 Si

Any hints on how to undo the brake lines? Tried a brake line spanner: didn't move the nut, but did a nice job of starting the rounding off process.

If I use vice grips, and destroy everything in the process, I take it I'm in 'please bend me some new brake lines' territory. Maybe I should just go there and get on with it...
Do your brake line spanners look like these?

I use them for Citroen hydraulics - don't seem to round the corners of the nut (as long as I choose the right size  ).

Yep, those are the ones. I was hoping that they'd be better, but I just couldn't get them to turn the nut. Vise grips did it, in the end - but at the usual cost.

I really like the look of the very fancy spanners @schlitzaugen suggested; maybe next time...

Those should work if properly made but I have not found them made by a reputable brand. All the ones I found were cheap (or not so cheap) crap from the usual suspects and of course they opened up and slipped when push came to shove so to speak.

There is something to say for good tools made by serious brands with proper QA/QC.

There is a place in Geelong called Qualitools, always seems to have Renaults parked out front. I have bought a couple of unusual tools from them and never had any trouble. Might be worth a try??

Given I'm under the car and pulling the subframe out, perhaps I should replace the gearbox at the same time?

Is this a big job in terms of additional effort (given the subframe will be off)?
Does anyone have a suitable gearbox they'd like to sell me? (If the car ever drives again, it will be a club car, so 'suitable' means closer ratios and shorter FD; and as swap-and-go as possible, consistently with my mechanical skill-set.)

110Nm from memory. A socket welded to 1m of 50x25 RHS usually moves them. You'll also need another 1m (with a plate welded to it) to engage two studs, which can hit against the ground.

Yeah, easier to undo these just a crack before you do anything else with the car on the ground.

I have some 3/4 inch drive stuff for things like these. An impact driver also helps.

Need to put on some weight, for when I jump on the breaker bar.

Anyway... short side out.

Uh oh. That's no good...

What do I need to do about that...? Driveshaft place or diy?

And out it comes.

Too easy. I wonder where all that oil is from... 🤔

At stumps today.

Next steps:
- fix drive shaft (or get it fixed). Not too sure about this one
- big clean underneath (oil, dirt, general crud)
- gearbox seals before driveshafts go back in
- upgrade struts and calipers and braided lines
- fresh subframe with new lower arms and powerflex ARB bushes
- lambda sensor

Anything else I should do while it is in bits? Preventative or performance. (Remembering that entry level club sport is the plan for the future, but on club rego, so it needs a roadworthy first - any common RWC items that I might miss?)

There’s 99 needle rollers, 33 each. Do you still have them all? If so, take it to a driveshaft specialist.

About the driveshaft, I would take the opportunity to inspect the state of all running surfaces and make a decision after that. If all is peachy keen I would have a go at putting it back together and then check for play in the joint. If all feels fine, it probably is. A quick look at the rollers after a good bit of cleaning might give away a bad situation before more effort is invested.

I definitely have 66 (because two bearings stayed together). I'll count up the rest, but it will be a miracle if I find all 33. What are my options if I don't? Can you buy them?

33! I just went out and counted them - seems I have them all. Amazing!

Everything looks serviceable. Car only has 76kkm on it, and drove ok before I pulled it apart.

So, job for a driveshaft joint...? M&S Driveshafts (http://msdriveshafts.com.au/) has been 'recommended' to me (a friend of my dad knows a guy who heard from someone that they did a good job one time). Any other suggestions from Melbourne Froggers?

Recommended by a generic but reliable mechanic for a Mercedes Sprinter replacement shaft.
These guys are the driveshaft place used by bursons.
And yes, they did the job well on the Sprinter.

Went with M&S Driveshafts mainly because they're not that far from me. Job done. Fingers crossed they did it well...

Any time you can rebuild an oem shaft you're way ahead of aftermarket options.
