OUT AND ABOUT

I always wondered why the front door pressings were "naked". Why were they modified ?
The front doors could have benefited with a bit of strengthening too to stop the stress tearing/ fatigue cracks at the sharp upper corners near the door handles and the corresponding rear edge.
Now here is an interesting picture :

A late second nose ID ( by the black windscreen rubber ) but with cendriers. ( The "ash tray " vents atop the wings ).
This Facebook site hosts many delicious Ds.

We were going to take the Big 6 to a small run from Trentham but took the Vagabond instead as the Big Six was missing slightly.

On Monday we took the Big 6 to Allans’s Carbies or such at Shellbourne near Bendigo. We picked the car up today and after putting in a new coil and fiddling with the twin throat carby the car is running like a swiss watch. Mark is very thorough and really knows what he is doing - - - and cheap. The carby was done up with someone at Reservoir some time ago but I never knew whether it was - - just right.

The cars at Maldon and the other pic is at Ballarat when we went to see the Linda McCartney photographic exhibition.

We went along with some friends through the bush. Two Landrovers and 2 Austin Champs. It was pretty hairy in some places so it is probably a good thing that Michael didn’t take the Safari.

Only the very earliest Land-Rovers had their headlights behind the grille!

Roger
Yes, there's one in the next Shannons.
Followed Michael in his Rover P6 to see the Brett Whitely exhibition in Bendigo and a Delage in Maldon.
(We all know the relationship between the DS and the P6).

Out again on a run.
Michael in the Peter Boyle Light15 and our Big 6. The 1959 Lincoln is a car to be reckoned with.

Followed one of those that was going to a wedding (very slowly) in Yugoslavia, many years ago. Great sounding engine - fascinating vehicles Tatras..

Carter Willy had one of those Tatra air cooled V8, in his collection of weird European cars. I think it was a type 87, which became the T600.
I had a drive in it in August 2005 at his place.
Definitely weird but fun to drive.
The cooling fan is belt driven, and if it fails, the first warning you get is a cooked engine.

Jay leno did a nice review of his (like he does with most of his cars).

Carter Willy, now there is a name I haven't heard in a long time. I hope he's okay :)

Tatra trucks are amazing, though we didn't see many in its home country.

There are many You Tube videos on offer. They have huge wheel travel but the swing axle nature may well mean compromised stability for high speed autobahn type use.

Here is a more general history

I think Carter's was a T603. Slightly less weird looking that the earlier T87 or T77, but still a Tatra.

It could be argued that Tatra leads the world in all wheel drive truck technology.

Sadly, Carter is no longer with us.

Roger

Yes, he was an enthusiast of the highest order. If it had wheels and used metric threads, he knew about it!

I had the pleasure of a drive in Carters Tatra in 2007, we had a CDI failure. Once cooled down we proceeded.
Attracted (a lot of) attention with the engine cover opened. The CDI unit is the box on the RH side of the engine bay.
China, Maine, what a place.
Carter was indeed a champion bloke, his partner Gabrielle a perfect match.

I took his red Messerschmitt KR20 out for a lengthy drive too. What a hoot!
I had one of the NY crew in the back and we went quite a way, until it developed a worrying rattle in the suspension, i took it very gently on the way back. Then Carter mentioned that it had a problem for quite a while, that he had been meaning to fix. So I spent the next hour or so fixing it.
