With my petrol 206, I undid the large locking ring and couldn't get it back on. It seems that this is a common problem....the threaded section of tank goes out of round. Had to take out the tank, but still couldn't get it to screw back on to the extent that it would seal.....there are matching marks that need to be lined up.
Put it back and it leaked fumes. Took it out again and took it to a Peugeot mechanic who had the correct tool to grab onto the locking ring, and got it done up really close to the matching marks. Luckily it finally sealed....the petrol fumes were killing me whilst removing and re-fitting.
A prick of a job.
