Feugo with mid-mounted 24V V6

But apparently they are cheap in the US where they were fitted to the unloved Eagle Medallion.
Oh yeh, you'll find them overseas alright, inc. NZ

They are big and heavy buggers to post, although I suppose you could split them into component parts...
The latest from my sister is that it's only $130 per cubic metre by ship from London, plus a few hundred dollars port charges at each end, so less than $1000 should do it from the UK, although if you were importing a 20 foot container with a car in it, you could stack plenty of gearboxes around it.

Cost from the US can often be more than this, because parts are sometimes located quite a ways inland and so there's the sometimes considerable cost of trucking them to port. So if you get stuff from the US it's an idea to get it from a port city (San Francisco, LA, etc).

Europa:
Is there a weight component to that fee?
No, only if it's air freight. By ship it seems to go purely on what they can fit in the containers, although if you were trying to transport something really really heavy (like a Neutron Star), I'm sure they'd complain.

Don't forget that stuff that travels by ship, if you're not paying for a whole container, is very prone to damage. Containers full of batches of various peoples stuff are often raided by unscrupulous warfies, according to my sister. I don't think they'd be interested in UN1's though, because you can't watch the footy with them.

Correct, the De Lorean used both the PRV V6 and Renault transaxles in automatic and manual versions.

Probably a good site to visit if you want to buy one:

http://www.delorean.com

Go for the warehouse tour to checkout the racks of motors and transaxles.

On the topic of the PRV V6, who knew that this engine was also available in the Lancia Thema?

Thema could also be had with 1.8 8v, 2.0 16v, 2.0 turbo, a diesel, Alfa 3.0 V6, and Ferrari 2.9 V8.

Would there be another car with more engine options??!!

John,

Yeah, I read that somewhere. That engine was certainly used in lots of different cars, in lots of different countries.

In regards to mid engine mods, or FWD to RWD conversions, I just found out from the NSW RTA website that such vehicles are considered individually constructed vehicles, and so must satisfy the same requirements as if you built a Super 7 or Cobra replica.

Dave

I knew I wasn’t going crazy. These are some direct quotes from an RCCQ article written by the guy who did the conversion.

“The car sat very high at the front, much higher than with the 4 cylinder engine. Measuring the ride height and comparing it to the height we had measured before the swap showed the conversion was about 40kg lighter!! Even mild acceleration allowed the light front end to rear up to full height, and this combined with worn castor bushes and a noticeably torquey engine meant driving the car required the use of a couple of extra lanes and some frantic twirling of the steering wheel as you wandered the chosen path.”
“Because the engine is lighter than the standard unit, the front road springs had to be shortened. This proved to be another ordeal. We almost lost count of the number of times front springs have been in and out in an effort to achieve an acceptable ride height. “

I had no involvement in the conversion. I too would have thought an all-alloy V6 would be heavier than an all-alloy 4 but I have to accept the observations or someone who has already done a conversion, as unbelievable as it seems.

Ren
cheers!

it can't be lighter
for starters you have an extra head then not forgetting 2 extra conrods, liners and pistons
then take into account the cracnkcase albeit 1 cylinder shorter but it is in V formation so there is more wieght there as well
the only thing i can think of regarding the ride hieght would be maybe they V6 once fitted sat further back than the original engine
even then you would have to sit the engine a fair way back to have made such a big difference

I have seen two different mounting points on the V6's - one where the engine mount is about 1/2 way along the block (R25 V6) and the other where the mount is a lot closer to the flywheel (R30)

So the R30 mounts would create more "overhang" - ie. more engine weight in front of the mount points.

I just can't believe the V6 is lighter, sorry.

REN TIN TIN:
conversion was about 40kg lighter!! :
There's definitely something wrong with the calculations those guys made. If the V6 was 40kg lighter than a 2 litre Fuego engine, that would make the V6 about 80kg. That's about the weight of a 1.3 litre swift engine, and almost as light as a bike engine/trans combination.

Both Pugrambo and I have lifted these V6's around, so we have a fair idea that they're alot heavier than a Suzuki Swift engine!

Sometimes when people convert 504s to a V6, the front raises up too, but the reasons are usually as follows:

-the engine centre of mass is further back
-the battery has been moved to the boot, which while removing weight from the front, also causes the very soft springs in the rear to compress alot more, and the front raises accordingly.

These V6's are not heavy as far as V6's go, but they are heavier than most 4 cylinder engines, excluding some 2 litre plus 4 cylinder engines with cast iron heads as well as blocks.

The R20/R25/Fuego/505 alloy 4 cylinder weighs about 120kg, depending on spec. The carby V6 weighs 156kg according to the engineers who designed it. The fuel injected V6 weighs about 170kg. So you'd think that the EFI V6 version of the 505 would weigh about 50kg more than a 505 GTI with the same accessories. Well guess what, it does (1335kg compared with 1285kg).

OK, here is a page where some facts seem to be listed, pan down to Renault on the list for the relevant weights in pounds.

As for the reason for the high Fuego, perhaps the car was WIP for a long time, the springs had "uncoiled" and had not yet settled giving a false impression the engine was lighter. Either that or the old Douvrin 4 was left in the boot!

The craziest Fuego conversion (i think ive dreamt of it...) would have to be to mid-mount a V6 but not just any. The most powerful engine to be produced by a French manufacturer - the Renault 1.5 litre V6 turbo out of Ayrton Senna's Lotus renault_ head_ban renault_ Good for 1500 hp tongue

Someone on here must have connections with Renault France to source one of these beauties, aye??? Surely there's still a handfull of them full of cobwebs at the back of the Dieppe or Viry-Chatillion factories :D

Renault must have some because i saw one of the Lotus Renault's used by Elio de Angelis for sale in Autosport but was being sold minus the engine (engine missing)........????

Fuego-F1 would be a hit at Calder Park on Friday nights :D
