Finally a Renault Car Club entry, thanks to John Elliot (16TS) not exactly a new face on the motorsport scene, so what about some of you Clio owners having a go, entry is available for the skid pan at reduced rates and without ANY preparation or equipment.
We have now reached 30 entries.

G'day,
I enquired a few weeks ago regarding the DECA day. Unfortunately it appeared that a family commitment was going to stop me going. However it now appears I will be able to go (11th hour stuff here). The car has a fire extinguisher fitted. The only thing I don't have is a helmet..
can anyone help??? p.s I have a med/large head......so no x\smalls.....and no smartarse comments....

Any word on when we'll see the results, winners/loosers posted up??! please
xqisid
ps im ticked i didn't get to go.

DECA was great. It was my first motorkhana and first time out on the track, and I enjoyed every moment of it.

It was great seeing cars old and new, even two diesels compete. The 307, 206 GTi and Clio Sport would've been the newest entries. Really, it isn't just about who wins and and doesn't win, so much of it is just about having fun and testing yourself. There were some drivers out on the skidpan just performing magic, like ballet out there - chances are they didn't get the absolute best time, but were bloody impressive to watch waltzing across the concrete.

You learn so much out there. I throughly enjoyed myself and was happy with my performance - although I wish I fully stopped in the garage on the first event! I think the 307 (aka, the 1304kg 1.51m tall 1.6 auto giraffe :) would've surprised a few out there - it had a handful of impressive times in a few events. Those 205s really know how to dance around the skidpan, and a certain 505 V6 Turbo certainly had a lot of "vavoom"!

Even if you didn't drive, it wasn't hard to enjoy yourself. There were some truly impressive displays of skill, and the social environment was great; you were amongst people of common interests.

A friend came along, and he never realised Peugeots were so good :) You learn so much out there, fine car control skills and the performance capabilities of your car.

I've made a few pages of pictures and maps of the events, which can be found here

xqisid, I do have some results, but they're only for the 307, 206 and Clio Sport, plus the event record.

Cheers,

Justin

ps i didn't mean anything by winners/loosers, just came out wrong realy.

Do you happen to know what the best times were for the figure of 8's?
Just curious if my 28 seconds (from memory anyway) from last year has been beaten.

Results available soon, looks a bit like the Clio is in the overall winning position, a very clean run from David Taylor.

Hey Justin,

Like ya pics!

Great story with them too mate.

Are the 307 wheel covers reaaaaaally flexible? When I got new tyres on my 306 the guy fitting them picked up a wheel cover and bent it and said to me look how flexible these are, and he also said that you could see Peugeot designed even their wheel covers for fast cornering... because they're so flexible they're less likely to pop off like the stiff Falcodore ones! :D

Derek.

I'll let Graham post the results if he has them soon, although I still can't work out where the penalty for O What A Feeling comes from. Nor can my co driver!

DeKa,

In regards to the wheel covers, I guess you could say they are a little flexible. Not Falcon rock hard tinny feel plastic, but not as soft and flexible as the wheel covers on my parents' Volvo S70. The wheel covers are pretty thick too (ie. fairly 3D, not a flat design).

The car didn't look right going round with its wheels naked :) I do suspect that they may have popped out on the circuit run, the tyres certainly looked and felt tired.

Andreas,

Best time on the F08 was 29sec, in the 505 V6.

Clio got 30.31
206 got 31.03

Now, I wonder what's happening to the FWD classes. Can we have an automatics class :)

Cheers,

Justin

Justin,
The 5 second penalty would have been for touching a cone.
Yes, your record still stands, Andreas. A funny event, the Figure of Eight, by getting the right lines it is possible to post a very quick time.
One year at the Grand Prix Rally a 404 (1800 South African model) posted fastest time amongst all the exotic Porsches, etc. etc.
I'll have the results tomorrow, a little bit surprising, I think.

Graham

OK Justin, interesting to hear that.

I'm glad to hear you're having so much fun in your new car :D Alot of people wouldn't be game to do such things in new cars I'd imagine?

Derek.

I dragged a Clio Sport (only a few months older than mine) and a 206 GTi along. Had I given more notice, we could've had a few more - DECA appeals to the "GTi" demographic. The next newest thing there would've been a 406 Diesel.

In all honesty, it doesn't hurt the car that much (certainly if you're doing motorkhana events), only the tyres. Track work is harder on the car, due to the higher cornering speeds, and hence cornering loads - in this situation, you do appreciate the value of lower profile tyres (they do more than just look good :) )

Looking at the low profile tyres on the Clio & 206 - they looked virtually untouched. My 65 profiles looked a tad sadder :( Still, a bit of tyre gloss, and it's all fixed again!

But I still don't recall hitting any cones  Ahwell shy

Cheers,

Justin

I have finally finished the results for DECA.
Dennis Edwards in the 2 litre 404 won overall thanks to a very good performance on the skid pan, and maybe some sticky tyres.
David Taylor in the Clio was next best, very well driven and a great contest between old car-experienced driver and new car-young driver. Brian Ward was next best in his 405 MI 16 and another new comer Sami Lay 4th in the 206 GTI.
Favourite for overall, Phil Torode in the 205 SI was 5th after a a couple of disasters on the skid pan.
Bill Hamilton in the Twin turbo V6 505 was clearly the fastest on the circuit.
Can I post the results file somewhere on Aussie Frogs?
Meanwhile email me direct for the complete results.

I certainly could smell that 404 around DECA :)

I'd give that car the award for the most impressive tyre smoke of the day, especially at the Cloverleaf stage.

I wish I had been there!

Well I think from what I've read it would be unadvisable for me to take the 505GR with its 75 profile tyres onto the high speed track if I value my tyres (which are brand new!). Maybe in a few years when they are worn out (or I could just buy a set of worn tyres/wheel combos from a pug wrecker and stick em on :D )

If you stayed with the motorkhana events, you'd be fine.

The only thing that would challenge the tyres would be the figure of eight test, but that's over in 30 seconds.

Cheers,

Justin

Nick, Your tyres and car would be ideal for a grass surface motorkhana, we should be running another at Main Ridge early next year, assuming the property owner is happy for us to use his paddock again.
Graham

DTwo:
Alright!!,

Go the 404! :D

A good effort compared to all the more modern cars out there.....
As I've indicated before, 404s are very "chuckable". I'm not surprised by the result, especially considering that it was Dennis driving.
