7mm Bolts!! Anyone!!!

Just my two bobs worth on this; overseas, it has been found that "copper grease" in aluminium castings causes the same problems that copper normally causes when used around aluminium and it has been suggested that instead of copper grease, the silver (aluminium) be used to help solve the problem. That of course would have to be the shyte that you get all over your hands when you use it no ,atter how careful you are, & paint everything you touch with it. mallet mallet

Many years ago (as all good stories start)

A mate of mine and myself used to buy up High tensile stainless steel bolts
at Hanger Nine at Moorrabin light plane airport. These bolts were mainly
in British and American threads and we bought the longest bolts that were
available. Jim Wilde used to cut the bolts and then re-thread them into new
stud bolts for use on a variety of motors including Austin Sevens.

As the interest was mainly Austin Sevens, this meant we had mostly
five sixteenth of an inch stainless bolts, studs, nuts etc. Jim Wilde died
many years ago and I suppose Hanger Nine has by now ceased to exist.

(they used to also crimp cable ends on stainless steel wire for brake and
plane cables)

Over the yearsI used many of these stainless bolts and studs to replace
existing plain steel bolts on water pumps and outlets after drilling the holes
oversize and re-tapping the aluminium heads.

I only wish I had bought more of them when I had the opportunity! but there must
be similar places with aircraft surplus somewhere. Nothing beats good stainless
steel for corrosion free ease of disassembly, and of course they do not cause any
problems with aluminium heads.

If anybody knows if hanger nine still trades or where they went too, please let me
know. In those days they had over 9 tons of aircraft bolts in storage somewhere!

good luck!
