6x9s in a 306

O i can't wait Lincoln, Im sharpening the hack saw just waiting to get into that parcel shelf MUAH HAHAHAHAHA  spanner

I'd recommend getting a custom rear parcel shelf made though. I used the standard tray on the Micra and it was good enough, though, so I just contradicted myself...I avoided cutting any new holes though

na, get some good quality thick MDF and jigsaw the exact shape of your current parcel shelf.

Done this in a 206 before and it works perfectly :)

Just remove your current one, trace around it on the MDF and get jigsawing!!!

I'm really confused here  . Does it make a huge difference in sound quality if i still use the same parcel shelf?
I mean i do like to optimize the sound quality but if it is minimal improvement is it really needed? How much would i be looking at for a new parcel shelf?

yup, that's what I meant, you can do it yourself with some MDF. Wrap the new tray in some carpet stuff, and you're done.

Asanka, the problem with using the existing tray is that it can vbrate more easily, thus giving a pretty ugly sound from the speaker. The more stable the base is for the speaker the better the sound quality. I run 6" mid ranges on the rear tray and don't have a problem, but 6x9s might be pushing it a bit, and could cause some problems with vibrations.

I'd recommend that you install the 6x9s without cutting any big holes. This is what I did with the Micra, the speakers looked stock as we just used the exiting 6" holes and speaker covers, and widened the holes slightly. Give that a go and if you are getting any vibration issues, then revisit the MDF solution.

what about the little straps and grommets that hold the straps in the hatch
isn't the MDF a little heavy for them
i know mine have popped out on the odd occasion with just the 7x10's in the rear shelf due to the weight

what do people use for the hinge part of the tray? those poles.. yes i'm bad at expplaing things.. =P

As Lincoln and Chris have mentioned 306's are shocking for sound quality. On one AF cruise we listened to a heap of our cars and quite honestly none of the 306's sounded as good as my SP20's system. My system consists of the standard head unit that has NO RCA outs, which goes into RCA convertors and into a V-Net Series 450 AMP. That feeds Pioneer 6" splits up front and a Sony Xplod 10" sub in the Sony ported sub box. The standard rear factory speakers remain and are only connected the head unit meaning you cannot hear them at all.

It has the sub box in the corner of the hatch against the back seat facing backwards and kicks some butt.

It sounds very even and clear. No one thing dominates the sound. For the $1200 it cost me installed I am ecstatic. That's been that way for the 2.5 years I have had the car and it still sounds the same as the day I got it.

Darren.

PS. The 205 has only the music of the engine to listen to. :D

You can't hinge the tray when you build a custom tray. If you build it well you can tilt it up manually, but I wouldn't want it going up every time I lifted the hatch.

Yeah, I don't know what it is. The tweeters sounds really rough inside the 306, versus other cars. We're going to swap out the top end AVIs in there for the Focals I orginally ran in the Golf. See how that improves the front staging. My regret is that my system is a bit of this and that, and not specifically chosen for that car. But, my gut tells me even if you spent a bucketload on top end speakers and sound proofing, you would still end up with sound that is nothing more than adequate. You would need a good sound processor and a very good installer to get the sound right in the 306.

Hence, my recommendation to Asanka to just run some 6x9s and a good amp and be done with it, no point in going nuts in the 306.

In the ex's GTi6 we had a system that was previously in her NX Coupe. When it was initially done in the NX it sounded fantastic and was even asked by the installers to put it into comps which we never did.

Then when it got put into the GTi6 it sounded very ordinary. The SAME gear just sounded flat and was lacking a lot in the midrange. Every 306 I've heard is the same. Heaps of bass, lots of topend but no middle.

Ok, so if i get a new parcel shelf i won't be able to hinge it so it will lift itself up? Is this due to the weight of the thicker MDF?(im no sound system buff so excuse my lack of knowlegde)

I am swaying towards just going for a new Parcel Shelf and just cut it out myself, it sounds easy enough. Again how much would i be looking at for the MDF?

However will the sound difference be significant?
I'm not expecting competition quality sound by any means and the speakers only set me back $100 so is it really worth me spending the time and effort?

Another question, which is the best way to do the wiring from the Head Unit to the Amp in the 306?

BTW WRCPUG did the wrecked gti-6 come with a parcel shelf by any chance? If so and you don't need it i might be interested if i decide not to sell my pug with the 6X9"!!!!

regards
Asanka

Ok so i went on the net to search about tips on making a parcel shelf and i found this at the 206gti.net <img src="http://206gti.net/andymac/bootside.jpg" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://206gti.net/andymac/boot2.jpg" alt=" - " />

Here are some pics of the parcel tray I made to take the free-air sub woofer. Slots in nicely like the OE parcel tray and still incorporates the hatch lift ties. This method allows for quite good sound without having the box setup which takes up so much room and also adds weight
So it is possible to "incorporate the lift ties".Now if the normal set of lift ties can support a subwoofer and a fairly thick bit of MDF then i'm sure it could take some 6X9"????

I don't have a 306 anymore to go out and have a look at the hooks on the door, but my gut tells me that they're not very strong. Have a look for yorself and see if they look strong enough to lift up MDF and speakers. This is the weak point and makes me just not want to bother using the straps. You can make the MDF so that it can hinge up, just don't strap it on, IMO.

Darren, great to hear you say that, that's exactly what is missing in the 306, midrange. And I'm only using midranges in the car, except the sub and then the tweeter is too bright. I'm going to try and offset it with a softer tweeter to see if that helps bring the midrange out again.

Our system came from a Micra where it sounded perfect, into the Golf GTI where it was decent and then into the GTi6, where it sounds merely OK.

PS, "only $100"!! You better respect them, or I'll have to come down there and beat you up wink

HAHAH i'm going to have loads of DOOF DOOF coming outta those $100 babies, ahahha na jokes Lincoln, they'll be treated with great respect, only playing the finest in Punjabi music(im kiddin)!!!

roll_lau :D :p

Ok i didn't even start this thread but i bought a set of 6X9's because of it, and have just installed it. Firstly thanks to Lincoln (gti124) for selling me his alpine speakers+amp <img src="http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/327000-327999/327683_25.jpg" alt=" - " /> <img src="http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/327000-327999/327683_26.jpg" alt=" - " /> .
After contemplating installing a new parcel shelf i gave up on the idea mainly because i was too lazy to do anything about it and i went to Jb Hi-Fi and saw these 6X9" MDF boxes, i took a set and saw how they'd fit on top of the parcel shelf.Unfortunetly they were too big and were also covering up my rear view, so i cancelled that order.
By this stage i had all the wires and just couldn't wait to install the thing so i pulled out the jigsaw, cut the shelf and installed the 6X9"s.
I've played around with the sound via the amp a bit now and i must say they sound awesome, i don't have the guts to go full blast (note the 6X9"s bridged between the one amp). So far i haven't really heard any negativity in regards to sound quality by using the stock parcel shelf(but im sure it would sound more secure with a thicker bit of MDF), i think if you tighten those support braces enough this should be able to handle any reasonable output.

I'll take some pics of it all soon.

Regards
Asanka

Glad to hear you're happy. What are you running up the front? You need a decent set of splits up front to give you some front staging. The 6x9s then work are rear fill. On the rear parcel tray you should get nice bass punch from them. Nothing that'll shake the mirrors, but just a nice amount of reverb...or that's what I had from the relatively small boot in the Micra.

Yeah splits are the next thing i'll be purchasing, i've been looking around of late. At the moment i'm using them stock POS speakers at the front, but even those are performing a bit better as they are the only speakers being powered of the Head Unit.
But i must say i am quite happy with my purchase cheers! .
