6x9s in a 306

I'm not a huuuuge fan of MP3, but I do use it with my NetMD player. However, I convert all of my own MP3s and that goes a long way to ensuring the distrortion isn't there. I use CD-DA Extractor which works very well.

Download from Kazaa and you'll get a lot of crap quality. The conversion processes is really affected by the quality of the PC and it's grunt. If I do a conversion on my work PC it's complete and utter garbage.

Chris, oh yes, the Focal Utopias...they are soooo nice. The warmth...drooooolll. I've heard top AVIs and they're clearer, but lack that oomph and warmthness that the Focals had. No amount of listening could convince me that the AVIs were worth the extra $$s.

You're right on amplifying crap, I wouldn't use anything except the new Eclipse stuff on my next system. I would've thought that a decent brand name deck would be "good enough" for most people, though.

OK, you know, I think I need to get a car again. All of this talk is really making me miss doing this stuff.

Alfa GTV V6...how does that sound? tongue

Alfa!!?. been there done that. They are the worlds pretiest range of cars. But now that at work we are stating to see a few of the older (ie 5+years) of the newer cars coming through and not holding on very well. Most have some glitches and flaws that after some age are showing up. Good to see alfa are sticking to their true roots.

Eclipse top-end (8061?) is briliant but, scores poorly in comps as it dosn't blend very well into factory dashes. And the lower range are as good as any other. Personaly a Nakamichi is better money spent. I love the basic function of them and tuff but simple look. The Naka's sound best too. All components are <0.5% tolerance, and hand picked. Plus a good Naka will outlast 95% of other brands. Maybe a top-line Blaupunkt or Becker will give it a run for its money.--- It still feels weird craping on about whats good and not, when as i posted, im down to cassete and 1 shot speaker...lol.-chris

CHRI'S16:
Dynaudio is VERY!! good but its just rebranded Boston gear (beleive it or not) and even most companie like JL, Boston and even Alpine actualy hire contracting manufacturers like VIFA and Fuji to build them speakers but to their specifications.
You sure about Boston & Dynaudio? It's not the other way around?

According to this page, I seem to get the impression they do it all inhouse out in Denmark and they actually supply some other manufacturers with their drivers.

Thats only for their HiFi stuff I think. I have heard that their ICE speakers are no where near the quality of their HIFI's too...though when you pay $150,000 for a set of speakers, it's no wonder.

What's the price difference between top Eclipse and the Nakamichi? I heard bad tihngs about the indash single DIN 5 disc changer from Nakamichi, as well as them going through loads of different distirbutors over the years. I agree that Eclipse does't look that good.

Chris, what Alfas are you talking about in particular? The GTVs aren't holding up well? (Gotta love our AF style of tangenting...)

Hey guys, i might have it wrong about who is who, but i do know that most euro car gear is manufactured by a few select Manufacturers, Example is like Polk audio, they are remarked DLS. As Brad pointed out, car stuff dosn't even compare to top-end home hi-fi.
Pro-comp cars in the us and europe, actually use home gear and even hire companies to make one-off speakers to kill peaks and dips in the frequency curve, acheaving near perfect scores on the RTA. Combine that with all that previous stuff i waffeld on about, it makes for some serious competing for just car audio.

Licon, yes early Naka's did have some reliability issues, but the design of the early in-dash stacker/tuner was an old Denon desing(a brand i used to love). The Eclipse dosn;t score as well as the Naka's coz in comps the Eclipse dosn't blend with factory dash's, sound and noise wise there is nothing in it, except when you use a hi-def RTA, the PINK noise level and tracking of the Eclipse can be heard over the 98% volume setting a little more than the Naka..., i know ,i know picky but, comps have gotten that silly! The Eclipses 16Volt rails are pretty wicked though. You could drive speakers of that! The ergonomics of the Eclipses scores poorer than the Nakas, as they are fussy and don't have the "click" feel the naka's do.
They ARE BOTH EXCELENT UNITS, i repeat both are, but just by a few little things head to head the Naka wins out.
Having said that, wait till you hear/watch a DVD on an Alpine F1 system, WOW!

As for Alfas, i mean the recent ones like early Spiders (96 97?) GTV's(97's 98's??), 156's, even some 166's. But remember they are still alfas.-chris

Thanks Chris.

Well, the Alfa idea is going out the window. I'm buying our old Nissan Micra Super S back off my brother. I've got wheels again, yay!!! I know it's not French, but with some mods here and there, some Yoko A032Rs and I'll be a happy man.

It might not be French, but the new diesel Micras have a French heart at least, the Renault dCi. When's this one heading to Wakefield :D

Just wondering, how long do the CVT belts last generally?

Once I make some mods to it. It's running on A509s at the moment, so pretty good tyres already. New exhaust, modify the intake, some adjustable konis and springs and Wakefield, here I come!

Sorry didn't answer this. I never had a problem with my CVT and whilst I had it, the mechanics said they were bullet proof, more reliable than the manuals. They were expecting double the life of a manual, or something. Could probably check carreview to see how the CVT is holding up. I'm getting the manual Super S though. I can get 175 60 R 13s in Yoko A032Rs, woo hoo! Picking her up weekend after next and driving her back to Sydney. Just so you know, it's white and her name is Albi...short for Albino.
