Was wondering what problems N5 306s had with electrics if any? As I'm having some wierd things happening lately to the dash!

Anyone know a competent auto elec?

on my ex 306, the only trouble i had with the dash was the dials not working. This was fixed by removing one of the fuses and refitting it. This seemed to reset the ECU as well.

Well can you be more specific Kristian??...
Most 306 owners know about their Sticking indicator stalk, that will keep the indicator clicking.
Also there was a N3 recall for the clipping of some of the wirring harness, not 100% on this.
Plus the A/C controler for the climate control has a little bit of a history...
tell us more, be as blunt or as vauge as you need to. cheers chris

:) Will do.

I noticed that when I accelerate from standing start that the engine & oil temp gauges waver/flicker. Ie; might be sitting on 90deg then drop to 70deg in an instant.

Also, very rarely but has happended when I turn the ignition the speedo and tacho go nuts but the engine idle is not affected.

Then there's the more common(I think) stereo flickering when the indicator is on or headlight flicker when accelerating.

Whatever it is it seems to be causing all of this and more like hwy engine temp is at very beginning of temp gauge ie: below 70deg.

A couple times the engine temp guage after switching of car went of the dial and dash literally (not from overheating just went the wrong way!)

Any help much appreciated

Kristian,

Given the problem is involving so many different components (on different circuits too) my bet is it's earthing.

How old is your car again? It wouldn't surprise me if one of the following is not right

-battery terminals - either loose, or have been taken off and re-fitted with a hammer (and not separated, put over the terminal and squeezed up then tightened). The other possibility is the terminals are just filthy.

-earth strap - not done up tightly where it mounts onto the body (or could be at the -ve terminal as I mentioned above)

-terminals for the dash instruments/stereo have somehow been tampered with (when installing a new stereo perhaps?) and might be not fully connected even though they look like they are.

These sort of problems with instruments etc were common in our Cit XM. Fixing up the earthing fixed the problems.

Hope that helps,
Derek.

you may also want to get your alternator checked out as well
if lights are flashing in your stereo while your blinkers are on it's a good sign that there isn't enough charge there but in saying this it could be as derek said a bad earth

hi kristian,

the only electrical problem i had with my 306 is that it had a tendency to go in and out of power steering whilst parking.

with respect to lights flickering you might want to take a look at your battery/terminals and/or alternator, but again as deka mentioned, could be bad earthing.

Cheers All.

Well the problem/s seem to be reccuring more often after getting a new battery. Forgot to mention that hard braking or cornering affect the temp guages so I'll check all the above and report back.

Thanks again

Was just wondering what the normal engine and oil temp is for the 306 and would this be any different for the GTi6? Also, does the temp increase/decrease much or does it only increase say when giving it some quick bursts or on hot summer days?

I have been told 90deg engine temp, sound right?

pugjet,
That's not electrical. It's a worn hydraulic ram which is worth about $300 +/- I think it cost me $400 to have it replaced. It is very very common on 306's with over 100 000km of predominately city driving. As such, I never ever use my power steering when the car is stationary as that is what causes the wear on the ram. Using the steering like you do in a non-power steering car when parking (move forwards super slowly while turning the wheel) takes a huge load off the power steering.

Kristian,
Hope that is the problem. Given the extra info about the battery it's sounding very likely :D

That's right for my car (2.0L 16v 100kw). Highway driving it comes down to 80-85, city driving it might go up to 90-95.

Don't rely on that guage for 100% accurate temperatures however. It's more the position of it that is important.

Never heard of a hydraulic ram before what is it and what's it's purpose. Ie how would it effect the electrics?

My car has 83,500kms however, I bought it(with 65kms) off a guy that basically took it one suburb to work and back with the odd weekend cruise. So sorta fits into your explaination.

Deka, does your's fluctuate much or is it very much constant?

The problem you are describing sounds like a faulty battery or bad earthing.
On one of my previvious cars (Toyota T18 to be precise) the guages for water temp and... ther was onther one but i cant recall what, went stupid.
That happened after a battery change. So I did a U turn and drove straight back to battery "specialist" where the consequent test revealed a dead battery plate.

My only bug with the 306 is the digital odometer not showing whole numbers. Then after 5 minutes of sweet talking the car the numbers come back and all is fine.

ooops sorry, I should have explained that better. The problem pugjet is experiencing is completely unrelated and is definately not electrical... so it has nothing to do with your problem. The power steering in a 306 is hydraulic, not electric. It is driven by a pump which is driven by a belt drive from the engine. The ram is mounted on the sub-frame of the car, right in the centre, just in front of the firewall. The pump is just near the headlight on the driver's side of the car.

Don't worry about it in other words. I was just trying to help pugjet out - cos his problem is unrelated to yours.

Derek
p.s. if the new battery is faulty and they have to replace it, get a calcium plated one. I have had much better experiences with them than with anything else.

My former GTi6 would hover around 60-90 (more often around 70) for engine temp and 80-90 for oil temp.

Yeah mine hovers around 70 despite the fluctuations just doesn't seem to be normal though.

I think my problems began before the new battery therefore that would rule out the battery being faulty

kristian, do this test for me, at night, turn on everything. radio, headlights, interior light, etc.
Now watching the interior light, from idle rev the car slowly past idle, do any of the lights become brighter?? and when yo let go of the gas do they dim down again?
Another thing to check is the -ve cable that goes from the -ve terminal on the battery to the body of the car. Its tricky to check, but if you can make sure it is very tight.
Also try to prise back the carpet and under dash trim, on the drivers feet area, when you do this you are looking for Green/yellow cables that got to a bolt head in under the cables and back under side of the fuse box. Make sure this bolt is tight too.
If in doubt see an auto electrician. Paul Vassalo, David Warner autom., or Esscargo/north shore rally sport, are who i recommend. cheers chris

Alan S:
Just a thought, but have you had the voltage regulator checked?

Alan S
.. you read my mind alan... hence why i asked him to do the light test that i wrote above. cheers chris
