Sounds like an electrical fault, check connectors and cables to the motor unit / switch.
With a bit of luck, something has come loose or corroded. Could be a fault inside the gearcase itself, but I'd wager it'd more likely be a problem outside of the unit.
Check the Haynes manual for the wiring, or take it to a good auto-electrician - doesn't sound too complex to fix.
