What 306....?

A girl at work picked me up & drove me to work in her 1999 306 xr. Can anyone tell me about this car it is a sedan. What is the difference between xr and xt that i saw on another?
What engine does the 1999 306 xr have? Any known issues with them? wink

The XT sedan has the newer 2L 100kW :D engine as per the 1997+ hatch XT.

XR's have the newer 1.8L 84kW base engine. As opposed to the early 77kW 1.8's

BTW there are also SR's (1.8L 77kW) and ST's (older 2L 92kW)
 
Can anyone peugeot fans tell me what car the 306 actually replaced?
I am thinking the 309??
 
Hmm I would say the 106 replaced the 205. But even then it's a bit smaller, either way neither the 306 or 106 were true replacements.
 
To the best of my knowledge, the 306 replaced the 305. The first number represents the class or size of car and the last number represents the latest generation of that class.
As for the 309 Peugeot aquired it when it purchased Chrysler/Talbot?? in the late 70's/early 80's. As there was an almost complete new car Peugeot released it along side the 205, so it isn't really a true Pug. a_drink
 
Was the 305 just a shrunken 505? They look similar side on, although the 305 is pretty boring to look at front on - doesn't have nearly as distinctive headlights as the 505.

No, the 305 was front-drive. It was an evolution of the 304, which looks like a shrunken 504. Nice logic there. The 304 had the gearbox in the sump (like a Mini) but I don't think the 305 did.

I don't think one Pug really replaces another, they all pretty well seem to be separate models. As we've seen in Aus, often the "replacement" sells alongside the older model for several years. Try that with Falcon/Commodore!

In my mind, the 406 should have been called the 506, as it's a similar size to the 505, and both were/are available with 4 cylinder petrol and diesel, and V6 petrol. The 406 is one size up from 405.

The 309 is mechanically very similar to the 205/305. It's defintely not a totally new car, it was designed under Peugeot just was originally going to be a Talbot.

yeah... thats the way Peugeot orginally intended it to be. This weekend I came across, an old publication of CAR (Jan '91). It details how Peugeot intends to replace the formidable 205... it says that it will be replaced by two models, not one: the upper range (205gti) will be replaced by a car "likely to be known as the 306". The 306 was to supersede the 309, also. The 205 base models were to be replaced by the 106. These two models babysitted until the spiritual successor, known lovingly as the 206, arrived.
