Below is a link to my web page with pictures of my conversion to fit a Toyota steel case gearbox into a 505 using a BA10 bell housing. Note the torque tube had to be shortened as the Toyota gearbox is longer. The same principal could be used to fit any motor/gearbox into rear wheel drive Peugeots.

ps. I have more photos but those on the website show all of the details needed.

Hi Whilst I can understand it might be useful with a bigger donk why would you do it otherwise??

Cheers

Jim,

I think Alan had a N9TE turbo engine in his rally car.

Alan,

Thanks for putting the details of the gearbox conversion up on the web. It will make it alot easier for others to do the same conversion. :)

Dave

Dave is correct I had a N9TEA motor in the car and I had allready gone through 2 BA10 5 speed gearboxes so I wanted a stronger gearbox. I selected the steel case Toyota gearbox as it has been put behind all sort of powerfull motors.

Alan

For fitment to a V6, I'd think it better to start with the semi-bellhousing from the RT81 Corona, turn off the back of the bellhousing (or torque converter housing) of the V6 and weld a plate to it, with some very carefully done spotting done to centralise and use the Toymotor bolt pattern on that plate.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge Alan. :)

Is the steel case Toyota box the 5-speed Celica box?

... and will we be able to see your 505 Turbo rally car competing any place soon?

Gus,

I don't think he has it anymore. I think his was the N9TEA engine which was up for sale a couple of years back.

Dave

Gus,

The gearbox is from a Celica I think it is model RA54 it has a 3.54:1 first gear, you can also get a 3.36:1 first gear.
Unfortunately I have sold the 505 rally car, in its current guise it has a 2850 V6 engine and 4 speed BA10 gearbox with Autronic engine management the new owner has fitted a Detriot locker diff and it makes for interesting driving on the dirt.
The turbo motor bent the crankshaft whilst trying to tow start it about 8 years ago, I still have all the parts and would love to get a straight crank and put the engine into a standard looking 505 and set it up as a sleeper as when the motor was going it had heaps of grunt, much more than the V6.
I have been told as it is cast crank it cannot be straightened. I thought of using an N7 crank (as in the 4cyl Centura) but it has a shorter stroke and the all ready low compression pistons come up short of the top of the block by about 8mm also it has less fly wheel bolts.

Alan

What's an N9TEA worth? I reckon one of those would be a lovely sleeper in a 404 with a 5 speed, 505 GTI wagon diff, and 605 front discs with 15" TRX style wheels.

You can buy a N9TEA in the US fairly cheaply. It's the shipping, etc, which is the killer. You also have to get all the reco bits from overseas, and even overseas some new parts are apparently getting harder to find because there's not alot of market for making them, so it basically a case of using up the new old stock. I doubt there would have been 100,000 of these turbo engines made, and most of these are off the road now, so who would bother making reconditioning parts for them apart from a few specialists in France?

Dave

I was able to buy all the parts that I needed to fully reco my motor from European Auto Imports a couple of years ago.
The N9T family of engines are quite long and require a different front crossmember (radiator support crossmember) in a 505, when I put the N9T motor into my 505 I had to massage the radiator support crossmember quite heavily to clear the engine pully, I also had to move the sway bar forward to clear the sump.
I do not think you could fit the motor and have room for a radiator in a 404.

For anyone who is interested in doing a toyota 5 speed conversion with a PRV V6, there's one for sale in the "parts for sale" section. The motor was rebuilt in 1997 and the 504 which it's in was resprayed, etc, then a boulder fell on the rear during a landslide a year or so later, so the mechanicals are hardly used. It's in Sydney.

Dave

Would you have any trouble getting the celica box to fit the the 504 transmission tunnel?

I noticed with the BA10 bell housing the gearbox sticks up above it. I know the BA7 gearbox is jacked up during engine removal. So there is some clearance.

But is that going to be a problem when pulling the engine in or out with the celica box?

Have you considered that you now have a lot of engine options! A lexus 1UZFE V8! I am sure you could get a housing that will bolt straight up to the celica box! 210 kws at the flywheel would make for quite a bit of fun! The other thought is the 3TG which is used in TA22 celica.
And 1GGTE 240Kws at the wheels.

i'm at a bit of a loss here
why would someone need 240kw's ????
with the weight of a pug be it a 403 up to the heavy 604 anything from say 100 odd HP up to around 250HP is about all you would ever need

but hey i might be just getting too old to understand why you would need 240kw's = around 315-320HP

I've no idea how tight it is, but Brendan (the seller) was planning to put a Lexus V8 in it eventually, seeing as he already had the toyota box.
