I knew that production of the VW Beetle went for a while (only stopping recently) but the old R12 seems hot on it's heels. Check out the latest state of the art release from DACIA, look familiar???

They could do a wanky remake ala the new Mini or Beetle  but that original 12 shape (practical, roomy, safe) is hard to improve on

A 4WD, 4 door R12 ute with an injected R16 motor??!!!! Yep, you read right....

Dacia have been producing old R12 rebadged for years I think.
Something about a very cheap euro car was there intention for third world countries. I might be incorrect though.
It looks good doesnt it? approve

There not actually R16 motors, there a stroked version of the old R12 motor, they don't go hard at all, plenty of torque but not much power.
There also very heavy and the handling "wow".
My Dacia 1304 4wd ute has a 1.4 Virage motor with a live rear axle and leaf springs and handles somewhere between a small truck and bloody awful, if it went as hard as a standard R12 I'd be happy but it doesn't come close.

I always just assumed that it was a Renault ute you had! Maybe you should put in a R16 motor - we know it will fit? What sort of setup does it run for the transfer case - centre diff, low/high range?
I guess its a similar story to the new Proton ute that just got released - a car designed by someone else, built in a another country and built for less glamorous work!

No I hate to admit it but it's a Dacia, we've considered a 16 motor but even with R12 power and no weight on the back traction is a big problem, I remember once trying to make a RH turn on a very wet road and the only way to get across the oncoming traffic was to engage 4WD.
Did I mention that there rear wheel drive normally and they have a "dog" clutch type set up to engage the front diff. The front suspension is R12 and the back is prehistoric so handle at all times is "interesting".

Also, what made you think it was Renault is because I pulled off the Dacia front and replaced it with Renault gaurds, lights, and bar, if you look closely you'll see the screw holes still in the front panel for all the Dacia plastic.

Thats odd - I would have thought front wheel drive would be the default? Whats the transmission setup - front diff still in the gearbox, or seperate like a conventional 4WD?
Sounds like you might want to sacrifice some load carrying capacity and take out a couple of leaves and add some good shocks, add an LPG tank for weight and then it might deal with an R16 motor.

Yeah a 16 motor on gas, I used to know of a 12 like that, with an 18 5 speed and boy was it cheap to run.
The gearbox in the Dacia looks like a normal R12 box except with a tail shaft sticking out the back. There's a dog clutch housing on the RH side between the driveshaft and the diff so the RH shaft is fairly short while the LH is standard 12. It's a weird unit.
