Hi Guys,

On friday just around the corner from where I live the headlights suddenly went from amazing headlights ... to god damn it's just become midday again   And the blower fans started actually moving some air in the car for the first time ever  followed closely by low beam dying ... I thought that's bloody weird and hit the switch for high beam to see if it was a problem with the switch ... High was bloody stunning ... Never seen headlights like it ... for about 5seconds until they went out too :disappr:

Today when i drove the car I found the alternator belt was screaming ... Well I put the car in the shed and put the multi-meter across the battery ... Hmm, 11.5volts with the motor revving :(

I found the '+' terminal on the back of the alternator had come away. So I soldered a new terminal onto it ... Nothing .... And no idiot light on the dash, and no 12volts at the exciter on the alternator... Much head scratching followed ... At which time I thought "Blown dash warning light bulb, if it's blown there is no exciter circuit", so now I have the dash in bits... change the globe ... Yes !! Now I have power at the alternator exciter.

Start the motor 13.5volts... Perfect  give the motor a rev 14...15...16....17....18volts    Followed by me freaking out and sprinting into the car to switch the ignition off.

So I pull the alternator out and fit a voltage regualtor that I have in my pile of parts here and she's charging perfectly again... Only the headlights.... Well the would you believe all the globes were blown ...... There duel optic headlights ... The 90/100watt main bulbs are both gone ... the 100watt inner optic globes are blown ... this is gonna cost me a bloody fortune just to replace the blown globes...

I however think I'm extremely fortunate ... 18+++ volts and no computer fried in the car ... Everything still works !!!

hehe Shane, you should know how lucky you are, it definitely helps being an able mechanic when owning an older Citroen.

You're very lucky you didn't have to take it to one of those "shoddy" specialists who charge ridiculous amounts, just because it's a "Citroen". (They also make up a bunch of other "imaginary" issues that are supposedly also wrong with the car!)

Shane, don't say things like that, bearing in mind that your car, and mine are sisters, I went to mine today, and the bloody battery was flat!!!!
I took the wiper motor off, and un-seized it, and it now works perfectly  which is a relief, as they are hard to find, even here!
I now have all the dash pockets installed, all with good doors too!
I've found you a good coin tray base, so if you have, or can find a good door, you're laughing!
I might have a wide door spare, but in grey. Would this be of use to you, if you sprayed it black?
Just to refresh your memory, I have for you, the computer holder, with a black door, a coin tray with no door, and a wide grey door. Sorry, no springs. john s

Maybe the Tripods are on their way, and we need Tom Cruise to get our cars running!!!

Thanks John, I'll let you know what I have. I think I have a lid that isn't broken, and maybe one unbroken base ... I'll have to check.

Sequence of events is really obvious ...

--20year old regulator on the car dies .... Alternator now charges a full power regardless of load.
--The headlights are on are given 18volts+++ of power and blow
--The heater fan actually moves air because it's being supplied with 18volts++ instead of 12-14volts
--The fanbelt sqeals 'cos at higher rev the alternators probably trying to produce 20+volts and massive amounts of currents, so slips it's belt.
--The terminal on the back of the alterantor can't handle the heat and power being generated so melts the solder connection and drops off
--The idiot light on the dash blows from excess voltage
--The alternator then no longer charges as there is no exciter circuit, and the power wires has dropped off.

Bloody bosch, you'd think they'd be able to make a regulator that can last longer than 20years

I had a battery die in the cruiser, 18+ volts went into the system including the other battery, metal cased Odessy battery was warped on 5 of its six sides, all globes, including headlight, brake, indicator blown, capacitor went in the radio, smoke through the dash vents. Disconnected the Alternator, and drove the car home with no battery connected, gotta love diesels.

Yeah,

are we bloody lucky or what ... I only drove for 3minutes to do that damage to mine.

Why are we both lucky  My car has about 5computers ... how about yours....

we have:
--trip computer
--AEI computer
--Injection computer
--ABS computer

err ... gone blank and can't think of the other one .... But they all still work ... Now THAT is what I call luck
