Surviving 406 Coupes - Australia

I have two. One is a blue 2-litre auto. The previous owner's wife had the transmission fail and so he began parting it out. I saved it as an engineless shell with no front clip and no bonnet. The second car is a V6 D9 manual. It is silver and was severely damaged in a crash. The damage is to the LHS sill, LHS door and LHS A-pillar. The car is missing a drop-link to the front anti-roll bar. Apart from that it is intact. All parts are present. The plan is to combine two into one...

One of my friends has a 406 coupe and plenty of spares besides. He won't part with any of his loot for any price. I expect he intends to drive the coupe until he suffers heart failure, brain death or some such terminal decline.

A cousin had one and rates it as one of the best cars he's had. I bet he regrets selling it.

Might be a bit tricky to combine the two. I have the last of the D9' and an early 98 D8 - I bought the D8 as a parts car (panels bumpers etc) and will probably sell the bits I don't need in a few years once I have all my cars in one spot and can see what I have. I understand your mates reluctance to let parts go.

Hi Stephen

Why do you expect it may be tricky to do the job? It seems straight forward enough (in theory). Am I missing something here?

Its just never straight forward. Eg when I bought the car the plastic surround around the memory seat buttons was missing. Stupidly I assumed that the engineers would design a part that could be used on the left or right.....Nope, they are specific to LHD or RHD cars and the difference is miniscule. Car manufacturers change stuff. It will look the same but when you go to fit it it won't line up. Very very annoying.

Quote Demannu - Do you know the VIN? What interior colour was it? Any pics?

I don’t have the VIN, but it was a manual with black leather interior. It had (Ferrari 360 styled) 5 spoke wheels, lowered, exhaust etc. Was a beautiful looking car. Don’t have any pics with the wider (better) wheels that I can upload, but there’s one below with the first set of wheels.

I've just discovered this thread. Mine is a Series 2 ("facelift") granite black manual with 156,000 kms on the clock.
Built in November 2003, registered in Victoria in January 2004. I'm the second owner - since 2009. I've just been at the All French Car Day here in Sydney and there were four 406 Coupés there, including mine. Two D8s and one other Series 2 like mine, the first one I've seen. So, there are still a few of the Series 2 about!

Here’s the aforementioned trio + shy guy parked outside (silver later model) at the French car day yesterday held in Silverwater, Sydney. I’ve also seen an earlier model in red a few times around Crows Nest. A nearly bought a manual lemon coloured one up the blue mountains but settled instead for the Diablo red one pictured, replacing my 306 gti6

Nice looking facelift. Are they ROH Modena wheels Ant? I saw that there is a nice low K car going to NZ$6000 at the moment.

Yes, ROH wheels, they are a bit of a nightmare, but they make the car look so hot, I have a mate who owns ARROW WHEELs in NZ He constantly refurbishes them for me, when you go on the open road, you hit a pothole and you dent the rims, he straightens them for me and he repainted the centres as they are close to 20 years old. I have had a lot of other Coupe owners internationally wanting to purchase my wheels, NOPE. I have another 5 studs set ROH Modena from a Ferrari 360, That I will put on my little red car, ( One Day )
P.S Thanks for the heads-up on the other Coupe, I may be worth checking out. considering only 106km and manual

Its certainly a good buy.

Its fro certainly a good buy.
Yes, that car looks to be very good, If I did not already have my manual car, I would be into it like a robber's dog. It took me 7 years to find the manual that I have presently. I also have fully repainted my manual car, at $6,000 Dollars, ( Google Review )
Also, my wife's Auto we have owned for 17 years, and I have replaced, the alternator, statermotor, Air Con Pump, and two Cam belts and fixed all the oil leaks, from under the cam boxes. So some considerable investment ( Also the wife will not sell it, or do the swap, she loves the Auto )
I have 5 cars and no garage, I have a little fibreglass car stored at my mate's place. I have attached some photos, and you can see the other Modena ROH wheels that I am considering for my red car. ( But it may take a bit to fit them )
Can you convert the 406 Coupe to take 5 studs 5/108mm from the 407 Peugeot?, Basically change the hubs, has anyone on the forum done this? Then I can then swap the centres of the ROH wheels to match this car. otherwise, I have to redrill the little red car hubs to convert it from 4/108 to 5/108 stud. ( Sorry the Car is not exactly a FROG ) ;-)

They are a nice looking wheel. The Concave wheels are nice too but they stopped making 18's and the 19's are too wide:(. Luckily I have a facelift so the wheels are the least grand dad of the all and having just driven from Melbourne to Brisbane and back via the coast road in our Monaro CV8, I am not sure that I want to ruin the ride in the 406. Its a nice cabrio btw! If I was to buy a car in NZ it would be an old diesel 4x4 so I could use it to go to all my favourite fishing spots. We are planning on a 6 week touring holiday on the South Island in the next couple of years
