Stuck removing gearbox in 205 Gti '87 (HELP!!!!)

We're pulling the gearbox out and although we've followed the instructions in the Haynes manual, we still can't get the gearbox out of the bodywork. All the bolts and connections have been removed, the box is free, but where we get undone is that there doesn't seem to be enough clearance to get the gearbox past the bodywork. The crossmember that holds the lower control arm gets in the way on the bottom part, and the bolt that forms part of the upper engine mount on the top of the gearbox gets in the way at the top. Are there any "tricks" we need to know in order to wriggle the box out of the car?
