This has probably been discussed before - I hate being a noob.

Is there anyway of putting a new head unit (the thing that you put CDs into and tune the radio on) into a new RS clio without loosing the total remote controls by the steering wheel or the 6 CD stacker. I have been told by many experts in various car audio places that a new head unit is what i need to power a decent sub woofer and big 6 inch speakers, but I would no longer be able to control the system from the remote :(

Thats one of the main features that attracted me to the car and I'm not about to give it up.

For the moment I am having MBQUARTZ 5 inch speakers and tweeters put in the doors and in the dash - they will just slot into the spots already there. Just take out the old and put in the new. :) I have been assured that they will sound alot better... but I want sub!

Anybody know anything about this?

Alpine Europe make an adaptor kit which plugs from their head unit directly into the remote on the steering wheel and also utilises the head up display on the dash, the adaptor however is very expensive. I did start to go down this path but it was far too costly and my head unit comes with a remote anyway.
The alpine dealers in Brisbane will not have anything to do with the adaptor kit, you will have to order it in Europe somewhere.
I hooked up an amp and a sub in the car using all of the existing speakers, dosen't sound too bad, sometimes the rears get a bit too lively, make sure you get a good amp with good bias control.

Run a RCA line converter on the oem head unit and get a decent amp to run a sub or two.... the standard speakers will probably keep up with to one 12" sub or smaller 10" (thats what i have) should sound pretty even.... if u go for more subs then its gets tricky... the subs will overpower the speakers... then u will need to upgrade ur speakers....
Glad i can help.....

Blaupunkt may make an adapter as well. They do for the Focus and most other cars.

:) :) :)

Great, thanks alot for the suggestions - I will have a chat to my friend who knows a little bit about audio crap about running an RCA line out converter on the oem head unit and see what he says.

I'll check up on the Blaupunkt thing as well... see what I can find out.

There is also another school of thought that perhaps pulling out the existing head unit and having it modified by a specialist may be a good idea - have them fit an RCA output, increase the voltage to 3.5v or something like that... but how expensive would that be?... :mallet:

If anyone else has any thoughts, suggestions or wants to rave about the set ups they have, please do! Rockford Fosgate head units look flipping great!

So if a new head unit is installed do you lose the screen? Or does the station/RDS still appear???

I know for sony hu's there are 2 adapters available. One that allows you to continue to use the remote and one that allows you to use the remote as well as the display. I think its about 120 aussie bucks for the one that does both.

Check this out-

There is a crew called Supertech Electronics in Bunall in the gold coast that can modify renualt clio head units. Just got off the phone to one of the tekkies there and he said remove the head unit and post it to them or drop the car off at JB HiFi and for $120 they will open the head unit up and put in RCA outputs directly from the source line (not the speaker line as previously suggested - this is bad for quality apparently).

This is good because once these RCA outs are fitted, that line can then be simply run into an obsenely expensive amplifier and then hooked up to anything I want (21 inch subwoofer included) - and all done with 100% quality signal. :headbang:

I am having 2 sets of RCA outs fitted so I can have a dedicated line for the sub and the other line for the other speakers. Rock on!
:adrink:

Have you got their phone number ? Did they give you any idea how long it will take em ? Is that $120 for the two sets of RCA outs ? Drop the car at JB or the head unit ? Or let JB loose on the car to remove it and send to them ?

They know their stuff. What Im going to do is probably have JB remove my headunit, which the guy said he might be able to do for nothing (zero $) which is cool... although understandable when you consider i laybuyed a $1000 four channel JL amp and a $550 sub + cables... thats car enthusiast behaviour for ya...

It costs $120 PER RCA OUTPUT... so its costing me $240 for the pair... but running that into a four channel amp is ganna be sweet. Im ganna run my MB Quarts 5 1/4 " drivers and tweeters off one channel and run a dedicated bridge channel to my 10" sub. I could have brought a more powerful sub or bigger sub, but I wanted quality of sound, not just for everyone to hear me going doof doof doof. Id rather just enjoy my obscenely expensive equipment myself. People will be able to hear anyway.

:mallet:

I recon this is a great idea for anyone who wants to boost their audio and wants too keep their totally awesome remote control and stacker - I'll post pictures of my setup once I get the stuff paid off in 12 weeks time. :snail:
