Hey guys

Anyone know where you can get a nicer looking Rocker Cover for the R15/16/17 or 807 engine ?

If so where and how much ?

Cheers

There are some nice alloy ones around, but they are scarce.

I keep hearing stories about them being reproduced, but it never seems to actually happen.

Try:

They do an alloy cover, but unfortunately it is cast up with "Lotus" written on it! Nice crackle finish though...

They can sell you a baffled alloy sump if you wish. Be aware, it will be heavier and more delicate the the original one - same goes with the rocker cover...

There is also the one fitted to the Fuego Turbo in the States. Cast alloy with Renault Turbo cast into it.

No idea on cost or availability though, perhaps one of the US based Frogs may be able to help.

Hey,
has anyone thought about chroming the standard rocker cover from the 12/15/17? I know with chroming they dip the entire item- problem is you don't really want any chrome from inside the rocker cover coming off and getting mixed up in the motor.... Any ways to get around it- as the black rocker cover is a bit boring!

Ben

Hi Ben, chrome should be fine - it won't come off, chrome rocker covers are common and I've never heard of that. Chrome usually only comes adrift if the metal is bent or corrodes underneath, unless the chromers do a shoddy job of the prep (they clean it up and plate it with copper and nickel before the chrome goes on).

I'd like to get a Gordini cover.

and get it pollished.

Hi there

The Renault 12 GL's of the early 70's had a chrome rocker cover as standard. Looked O.K. when kept clean but looked horrible when it was covered in oil and dirt. An alloy one would look heaps better. As above.

Regards Col.

That pic I posted before was out of a R12G.

I'd say its all close to standard. just by looking at the pic.

although daves the expert, he'd be able to to tell us.
Its pretty much what his engine looks like. except allot cleaner.

I had a spare R12 Gordini alloy rocker cover like the one in the picture. I sold it to someone in the 15/17 Register (possibly Paul Groome) so that they could replicate them.
Someone will know what happened to that proposal.

Robert

I had also heard that a 15/17 Register person had bought a rocker cover, also to get it replicated. There were initial expressions of interest, but nothing has happened since.......

Must be too long since I've bought Renault parts I forgot the obvious place if no-one in AUS is stocking them.

MecaParts in France stock alloy rocker covers for the 807/844 motor in both Alpine and Gordini styles. The one on the 12 G in the pic looks like the Gordini version.

Look under cylinder covers, oil sumps, caps in the engine section.

Have you guys ever bought anything from Meca ??

is there stuff good quality ?

does it take long to come from overseas ?

Thanks

Yes, I've bought from MecaParts.

Yes their stuff is of good quality, but I've not bought one of their rocker covers. Most of the items are brand name OEM stuff like Sofabex or Bretille but in a MecaParts box.

Depends how much you want to pay, anything from a week to three months. Airmail or suraface mail.

Simon

It seems like a awesome site.

Pitty about the cost on some of there items.
but what can ya do.

Ash

Simon, is Bretille a good brand? That's what Euromotive over here used for my pistons (and liners?) in a rebuild a while back - just interested.

Stuey

Stuey, never heard of any problems with them, and they seem to be a common well known brand. I suppose I'll find out soon enough, I've got them in my 8.

Simon

One of the Europa guys I know said that the Bretilles were quite heavy compared to the standard pistons, I think he said something like 40 or 50 grams heavier (this was for a 1565cc kit I think)

So he had pistons made up instead - this guy is really into performance though (also he uses the car in competitions, and there is only so much he can do to the motor)- I don't think it'd be worth all the hassle!

Maybe the extra weight will also make them longer lasting!

I weighed the old (seemingly original) and new (MecaParts Bretille) pistons for my 8 before the whole lot was balanced, there was not a lot of difference in weight between those particular sets. I guess it all depends on where the manufacturers obtained the original design from, whether copied from original parts or one of their own design.
