I've just got home from the State Library, after sorting through their archive of Wheels magazines. I've photocopied reviews of the 505 GR and first 505 Diesel Turbo. I also have a comparison of the VH Commodore, Audi 5+5, Pug 505GR and Renault 20TS. When I have time I will scan them in and get Gibgib to post them on the main site.

:)

This is pretty cool :)

Is the diesel 505. They had to push it very hard to get it to do this

A place to help you locate reviews for the 505 (or any car in fact) done by wheels magazine dating back to 1953 is to log onto their website at http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/wheels and click on "car buy assist", it then goes through and locates the various reviews they've done on that car (tells you which issue, page numbers and the type of review) ...then asks you if you want to fork out $7 (per article) for a black and white xeroxed copy of them! I'd stop there, and go back to your local library and read them there. (strange icon added for dramatic effect!).

well thats exactly what i did :)

I went to that site, found out which issues had reviews of the 505, then went to the State Library and got them out and photocopied them at much less expense (can even get colour ones)!

I've emailed a 5 page review to gibgib, so when he gets them, he can put them on the site.

Silly question I suppose, but wouldn't you seek reviews _before_ you own the car? roll_lau

-edit-
On second thought, did you manage to find/scan any Auto Renault 19 reviews? :p

Hi nJm,

I received the articles you sent & will hopefully get them onto the site this weekend if time permits.

Thanks wink

Lol, well I didn't. I was told they were good cars, and found one in good condition and bought it. Now I want to read reviews to see how popular they were when new :)

I've got some reviews I photocopied from Wheels when I was doing "which car I should I buy" research.

I've got comparisons of the 604 to other European cars; 505 STI Exec to a Fairlane and other Japanese "luxury" cars; and a review of the GTI Exec.

So to post these up on the site, would I e-mail these to Gibgib? And in what format?

Why didn't you try Motor (or Modern Motor in those days) and Autocar & Motor?

Motor was actually a decent (if not better) competitor to Wheels before the mid 90s.

Autocar & Motor has pretty good detailed individual reviews.

Now Wheels has lost the plot in copying Motor. They may as well let Motor be better at being Motor.

Cheers,

Justin

silverexec,
Doesn't matter what format they are in as I can change it. I convert to smallest/ quickest download without too much quality loss.

I forgot to email you about that njm. I managed to get your reviews up on Saturday.
cheers!

Are there any hassles with Copyright by reproducing these things and making them available on the Net??

Simon

mmm.. I wondered that too.

Where possible I add the source including the month of the mag it came from.
Yes but more clarification would be helpful.
It's old info & the credit is given back to them so I don't see an issue

P.S Simon there were no Renault 4's at the Brisbane Bastille Day disappro
There were a lot of 4CV's & the one I voted for won best Renault.

Regarding copyright; I know of some sites that provide copies of manuals - don't worry about what for :) - and I believe that so long as you acknowledge credit, and remove the content if requested by the copyright holder, you should be right.

I only checked out Wheels since it was the only motoring mag that I knew of that had reviews of Aussie cars and Aussie versions of imported cars. I didn't really take much notice of Motor for some reason... don't know why.

Gibgib,
I'll scan the stuff that I have and send it in to you when I get time.
And just correcting, the review I have is of the 505 GTI, not GTI Executive as I said earlier.
:)

When I attended the QFCD back in 1999, slumming out in a Rent-A-Pug, there was a '63 R4 in original toothpaste blue with an odd guard and bonnet. But there were plenty of other interesting cars there too!

I've managed to scan the article I have comparing the 505 STi Executive to the Nissan 300C, Toyota Crown and Ford Fairlane, and I've sent it in to gibgib so it shouldn't be too long until it's up on site.

And it shouldn't be too hard to guess which car won the comparison... wink
