R20 fuel tank

Hi There

I have a '82 20TS, and have just removed the tank to have a small leak repaired. After I removed the sender unit, and had a look inside, I noticed a black plastic square bowl about 10cm across and the same deep underneath. It is loose but looks like it should be attached - any explanations?
