Last Sunday I was at a new car show in ACT called Marques in the Park. In it we had a 1969 R16TS parked next to a Lotus Europa. Can someone tell me what R16 engine/gearbox versions would be in a Europa? Refer me to a website?

Early Type 46 (S1) and Type 54 (S2) Europas had the 697-04 1470cc non crossflow Renault 16 motor slightly modified with different cam and higher compression pistons. There was a Type 65 for the US only which had an 821-30 1565cc non crossflow motor as well.

Gearbox was a four speed Type 336 with the crown wheel flopped over from the 16 for the S1, S2 and TC, with the TC having an option (standard on JPS version)of the 365 five speed from the 17TS/12G.

Apparently Colin did a deal with Renault to buy the motors for something like 10 pounds each. But when Lotus wanted to buy the more powerful 16TS motor, Jean Redele from Alpine put pressure on Renault not to supply, as he considered the Europa competition for his Alpines.

The 16TS/15/17 transplant seems a common conversion to get a useful boost of power without going down the expensive, unreliable Lotus TC engine route.

Adding another snippet of uselss info, Which (Choice) magazine were satisfied in their test that the fibreglass body wouldn't burn, but they found that your bottom could feel cold and damp if the car was driven on wet roads.

Here is a site with S1 history....

More useless info
There is a place in the UK who are the Europa specialists

Also All the 807 series engine variants will fit the europa right to the 18 1647 including the the 5 speed gearbox but needs the Mounts and the gearlinkage adaption. Banks have photos on the site of the parts.

The car I saw was an S2 Europa. So your basically saying that it would have a slightly modified TL motor?

Yes, original equipment was a modified Renault 16 (pre TL) 1470cc motor with 80odd bhp.
