I live in New Zealand and I currently own a 1998 306 xsi 4door with over 280 thousand kms, she's in lived a hard life.
I'm looking to purchase a 1998 306 s16 and am wondering if anyone or anywhere can help me check the vin. I'm told it's GTI6 spec as it's a japanese import just want to basically ensure it's essentially an international gti6 before I undergo getting it back on the road instead of my xsi.
The search used to be more functional on this forum so I haven't been able to find as much as I used to here.

There’s a duck duck search widget on the forum home page that works better.
I can’t help you with the vin but my 1998 XSi and I salute you.

I'll have a go. I love my xsi and it's had a good life but if this is a japanese gti6 essentially I can see the worth in changing 🤣

May have found my answer, it appears it most likely is entirely a gti6, just like everything in Japan it has a different badge 🤣

This 306 Timeline FAQ used to be a 'sticky' thread in the Peugeot forum, took me a while to find it again....

Essentially the N3 S16 1994 to March 1997 VIN VF37CRFT2xxxxxxxxx where
C = 3 door hatch
RFT2 = XU10J4 with BE3/5spd gearbox
A N3 S16 2.0l engine number stamped on the block will start with PSARFT10H

The 306 N5 series started DAM 07448 = 31/03/1997

The N5 306 XSi VIN VF37ARFVExxxxxxxx where
A - 5 door hatch
RFVE = XU10J4R with BE3/5spd
A XSi 2.0l engine number stamped on the block will start with PSARFV10H

The N5 306 GTi6 VIN VF37CRFSWxxxxxxxx where
C = 3 door hatch
RFSW = XU10J4RS with BE3/6spd gearbox
A GTi6 engine number stamped on the block will start with PSARFS10H

So, if the 1998 306 s16 you're looking at has the RFS engine it's a GTi6, otherwise....

VF37CRFSW, yeah matches up. Looks like it could be worth the effort then. Thanks for the confirmation on vin codes I knew I had seen that post before. I guess if this works out I'll have to find out what's worth keeping off my xsi 🤣
