New Renault for only US$5500

Maybe we will see the X90 tomorrow. The Bucarest, Romania motorshow starts 26/9.

How much better than an excel would such a car need to be to sell well here?
I think you'll find most people buy Excels because of price (I've only come across one person brave enough to admit he liked them).

The X90 doesn't need to be better, just priced below the Excel by a reasonable margin, (and have a conservative 4 cylinder motor, anything too radical won't work here).

Ren
cheers!

Craig if you do see it take plenty of pics.Put them on your site......

Craig:
Interesting point about India.. not sure how many cars they sell there. India now has its own manufacturer, they have licenced technology and developed a cheap car for India with Rover. Saw it on BBC World the other day.
India have been manufacturing cars for decades. Nothing to write home about, but still. Google on "hindustan ambassador" and prepare yourself to observe a technical tour-de-force...a Morris Oxford by another name. And they are selling them back to Britain, too!

BTW the Tata Indica (the car you mention above) is supposedly being sold as a Rover in the UK as their new entry level car.

I would be almost certain that the X90 (now there's a nice name stolen from a classic Suzuki) won't be sold here. Renault would be looking to cash in on the same market as the Fiat Palio and the upcoming Mercedes Benz cheap car touted to be built in China. There are millions of people wanting to move upmarket from pushbikes and Vespas in third world countries. These people are the target market.

Sorry Ren I don't have those stats you wanted, mate.

The X90 is just the codename.. just like the Laguna III is X91.

The current base model of all of the Renault range comes in at a low 7000 euro.. (including 15% tax where I am), so 6086.96 ex tax. Thats not a bad price for a rock solid mini car that can comfortably carry 4 people and has a decent boot. Top model Twingo does make it to 10644.63 incl tax though (incl tax)

I think for the Australian market the Twingo would be more suited. It can easily take on the shopping trollies from all companies and win. When the next one is released it will also be made in RHD, so then will be a possibility to sell in Australia.

I can't work out wtf they didn't sell the original in RHD configuration. The layout of the interior looks pretty much like someone gave the idea a thought at some point.

The English third party RHD convwersions
were priced at a level that would indicate there were no major engineering issues involved in the process.

The Twingo is such a good car. I enjoyed driving it so much more than the Clio I leased in France that it wasn't funny...just loved it! Absolute cult car in the making.

cheers!

A few things everyone seem to have forgotten!
Automatic, Airconditioning and Airbags (2 at least).
The car will need all of these to make it the Aussie market, which will add to the developement costs as well as the retail price.
It will also need to meet stricter emissions standards!
Bring on the Kangoo I say!
cheers! Cheers Renomad

"why be normal"

Twingo has all of those :)

It has the lowest CO2 emissions of all French cars at 135g per km and consumes just 5.7l/100km. 1.2l in 8v or 16v available.
Airbags: 2 in the cheapest version, side ones for 237 euro on cheapest model. All models above have the 4.
Aircon is available.
No automatic but there is the Quickshift 5 box, ie automated manual (stick, not paddles).

Most of the Renault petrol range is already Euro IV compliant which doesnt come into effect until 2005.

If they can bring them out here for $10,000 they can undercut the Excels etc. People buy them on price, not engineereing, and very few of them buy an automatic as the wimpy engines in that price range struggle with them. Dhiatsu Sirion is about $11,000, has 3 cylinders, I have not seen one in auto, and are bought on price. I think it would compete well.

Yes the Twingo has all of that Craig, but it's not right hand drive!
If they were, I would have owned one years ago!
cheers! Cheers Renomad

"why by normal"

Something else everyone has forgotten are the delivery, dealer, GST and other on road charges, which add a substantial amount to the "Drive away" costs!
My wife's Holden Barina was advertised for $15,990, add all the above mentioned charges and the "Drive away" price was $20,000 plus $1000 for air conditioning (which is now free....BAST@#DS!).
cheers! Cheers Renomad

"why be normal"

Yes Renomad, I know. I drive one many days of the week. However, the next Twingo will be built on the new Clio/Micra platform and it is planned in both LHD and RHD versions.

Too late, someone has already beaten Renault/Dacia to the market with a "car for the masses"

Don't konw if it's got airbags though.

Ren
cheers!

Bloody nice for a cheap car. Sure looks better than any Hyundai I've seen.

Bring it on Renault Australia!

I do question how they would sell it here. People keep talking about the Hyundai Excel/Accent. That car sells for $15,490 in base configuration. Hyundai's other small car, the Getz sells for $14,490. Both are hardly $10k econoboxes. Hyundai keep talking about their desire to move their brand up market. Still, I don't see that many of these cars around. Neither do you really see the Daewoo Matiz (a $12,490 38kw 0.8L hatch).

I doubt such a cheap car would sell well out here. How many Lada's do you see on the roads. Most people will either buy a second hand car, or fork out the extra for something like the Barina which comes with quite a bit of equipment and half ok dynamics for a moderate price.

I think Renault needs to pay more attention to marketing the Clio. It is a brilliant little car, and should be able to outsell the 206. I think Renault have enough on their hands trying to build an image down here without attempting to diversify to such a large extent.

Well I agree with the idea about concentrating on the Clio.. but as for diversification things are going to change a big way in Australia next year given the release schedule. You have Megane II 3 and 5 door, Megane II sedan, Megane II Coupe-Cabriolet, Megane Renault Sport, Trafic, Master, Kangoo, Espace and Scenic II.

The X90 is a good looking car, who knows, there might be a market for it here, but Renault should sell it as a different brand. As VW do with Seat and Skoda, both of which are going to make a return to our shores in the not too distant future!
cheers! Cheers, Happy Oktoberfest!

Geez, the Getz and Excels are bloody everywhere in Perth.

IMO, there's no chance the X90 will be sold here. None.
