If you're a nervous passenger, Renault has a car for you. But you will need to be quick to buy it.

The French car maker is expected to recall more than 45,000 right-hand drive Meganes - including 500 in Australia - because the brakes can be inadvertently applied from the passenger's side.

The problem was detected in Britain after a woman lost control of her car when her husband, sitting in the front passenger's seat, turned to help one of their children. He had placed enough pressure on the footwell to trigger a part connected to the brake pedal.

The Megane was designed as a left-hand drive and, overseas reports say, the flaw is a result of the conversion to right-hand drive.

An independent British motoring body, the AA, deemed the car dangerous after it replicated the fault. The Glasgow Sunday Mail reported Renault's technicians were unable to replicate the fault, but the newspaper had done so on three cars.

A Renault Australia spokeswoman said no such incidents had been reported locally.

"We are aware of the potential fault and are awaiting a response from the engineers in France," she said. "We will notify customers individually as soon as we know what the situation is and what action will need to be taken."

I'd imagine there would be lots of wives going out to buy these models for their 'hooning' husbands to exert a bit more control over their spouses driving habits ! :roflmao: Could be a great selling point!

umm, an isolated incident found in one model of Renault, yes.

Don't bother clicking on the link people, it's the same text as on the first posting.

Anyone got any actual information as to the cause as yet?

...unless it's like the old "unintended acceleration" fault from a few years back (Audi in the USA)

What we need is one of those people who were going to buy the Dialogys CD's from Ebay to inform us what the arrangement of RHD pedals is. Sounds like the car may be set up for easy conversion to a learner driver car for RHD markets!

Moderators can move things around ... combining 2 threads makes sense.
So it mightn't be the happy weed playing tricks on you :)
