Hi there,

I've been having trouble for some time now with the fuel injection system of my 1976 Peugeot 504 LTI. The fuel is not burning efficiently and hence acceleration is poor, not to mention the toxic petrol fumes. Add to this the current price of petrol and there is a real problem. I have a fantastic mechanic in Brunswick, who did his apprenticeship on 504s, but unfortunately his dad always took care of the fuel injection systems and this knowledge died with him. I'm hoping someone might be able to recommend a mechanic on the North or Western side of the city (Melbourne), who is experienced in the repair of Klugelfischer fuel injection systems please?

Thanks so much for your help,

Madame P.

Not many around

Rich running a common fault, sometimes related to air leaks or diaphragm faults. Best to stay out of the innards of the pump unless evry skilled and no other solutions available.

Evan Martin, of Evan's Classic Car Garage in Box Hill North, has a lot of experience with them and is a) honest and b) a thinker. It is not geographically all that good for you, but the important thing is to find the right person and they are thin on the ground.

Best Wishes

Andrew

Also Porsche and the hot V6 Capri

Porsche used it well into the 90’s for their race cars because it was simple and eminently tunable ( if you had the right tech and a shitload of alternative ”cams” for it”)

There is a chap in Nar Nar Goon who has experience with Lancia Flavias and Kugelfischer Injection.

If you need his details I can PM you. He may have contact with someone who can service or diagnose issues.

Regards Syd

Thanks very much Syd, I would very much appreciate it!

Thank you for the recommendation, I can get my car there on a tow truck, as it's within the 25km limit for RACV. I'll give him a call.
Thanks so much!

Capri RS2600 road cars had it but not the RS3100. I have seen it on an older Merc so there may be some Mercedes people with knowledge, unless this was a very rare example.

I also have a repair manual for the injection system from peugeot in book form

Thanks everyone for your helpful responses. I have booked her in with Evan Martin, although he can't see me until the 4th. I called him and he just seemed honest, really knowledgeable and even gave me a bit of an idea of cost given various outcomes. I'll let you know how it all goes.

Thanks so much and best wishes for the Festive Season,

Madame P.

Just watched an episode of Wheeler Dealers yesterday, where Ed China had to repair that same unit on a BMW 2002 . He took it to some specialist dude.

Probably Nottingham diesel. They are good, honest and give good advice. Not official KF service agents so may get caught short with some bits.

Official agents are Koller and Schwemmer in Nuremberg, who are good, but expensive to use. The business of posting the unit back and forth is expensive and anxiety provoking ( have done it )

They are such a simple system yet people seem to think they can play with it and then everything gets lost and the car runs like shit

Start with the simplest of things and put new filters in, new plugs and points and if still not right look to make sure diaphragms are ok and ensure the cooling system is actually working properly, that is no one has removed the thermostat

If still not right then look to make sure the cold start isn't leaking fuel into the manifold

Still not right ? then start to look at setting the base settings for tuning

once you get it right don't bloody touch and don't let anyone else touch it either, just keep the plugs and points spot on and clean filters

Not bad pugrambo for a "bushie"!

One you missed that could catch a few out: Flush the radiator cooling system (LOW pressure only please). Especially check that the thermostatic element (affixed to the side of the pump) is not blocked inside with corrosion and crap (These Ti's are getting a bit old now). This can be done by disconnecting both the hoses at the firewall end and check water runs freely through the element. Do not disconnect hoses at the element end.

That was when they were in America and the car hadnt run for many years. He had no trouble finding a specialist in to rebuild the pump in LA.

Thank you pugrambo for that run down. When I spoke to Evan Martin, he pretty much explained the process as you describe it here, which makes me think he knows what he's on about. However, I will print your suggestions and give to him for reference. Thank you!
