This may sound like a silly question, but I have no idea what the little box on the roof, above the rear vision mirror is for.

I had a brand new plip sender come with my 86, I put in 4 new batteries
in it and it worked if you held it up close to the glass in certain positions
and then the batteries ran down.

The infrared beam is not that strong I think, and the micro circuit uses
too much battery juice.

Therefore I don't think it is a proposition to change one into an earlier car.

You could investigate the radio style units that turn alarms on and off,
I am sure they could be modified to work the door lock circuits, or if
you are a whizz with electronics you could just build up and electronics
kit that fits into the circuit.

If you do find one that fits and works, let us all know.

Thanks Ken, I will investigate this further and let you all know.

go to Jaycar/Dsmith?autobarn etc and get an immobilisor - comes with a radio remote that is connected to the central locking. Only bother with PLIP if youve got it already and it still works......

I still have a use for mine in my '85 Fuego:

I removed the lens and jammed a springy tongue of chromed metal bent into a kind of hook, forming a nice sunglass holder - really cool!

Could be interesting in the event of a collision, spiky pieces of wire at head height.. eek!
