How EZ is it to steal new cars?

People don't steal Renaults a lot. Never have! Their steering column locks were excellent and their keycards weren't bad either. Don't know about proximity keys but the missus' 2017 Megane is still in our hands.......

I put this best theft deterrent on another thread. Life's not always like a computer game.😉

Here's an Aussie news article where GTA didn't go to plan.

It depends on what part of town you are in and which city. Very easy if the thief pulls a gun and says "get out of the car". Also easy when the owner leaves the keys in, engine running while they go into a shop.

They would be even more confused stealing pre 1980 where you have to pull out the choke to start the car when cold

Yeah, I'm not so sure about these reports about how easy it is to steal new cars. Even in the article liked in the OP they mention all sorts of software written by the guy giving the rundown and specialist tools, etc. Someone with these capabilities knows what they're doing as opposed to your average high school dropout who might have wanted to take your car for a joyride in the past.

And yes, the specialist only needs half a minute to steal your car these days car but in the seventies that was probably down to ten seconds and you didn't need any tools.

Mind you, if all they want is to steal whatever they find in the car it's still easier to brick a window. And the stereo is off the list because you can't use it once unplugged from the car it is coded to.

Hi I am shocked !! but not surprised really !
My brother in law has had a Lexus for a long time. Nice car ! But it was stolen years ago from outside his house in inner Melbourne. It was recovered after a few days without the mag wheels and tires. The spare change gone too but not much else. To replace the wheels and tires with genuine, was worth some thousands of dollars.
The insurance company was very uncooperative and almost accused him of a scam, and put a private investigator on his case, as they said the car could not be driven away without the key, which was still in the house. It caused him a lot of grief and he was insulted by it. But in the end his legal adviser pointed out there were ways to steal even high end cars that the criminals used and were available easy enough in Asia.

One can get or buy just about anything on the internet if they know where to search.
Much available, including programmes in article, costs peanuts in the scheme of things.
Guy up the street came out one morning & his new Alfa was missing one front wheel.
Panel Beaters parts to order over social media probably.

Just convert your car steering wheel to vice grips
Place in bag when you leave the car
