Hi All

I’m new to the forum, but made it along to the first couple of hours of the WA drive to York recently – great fun :D

Just read a great article in the latest Evo, having a go at one of the original magazine advertising campaigns for the 205GTI 1.9, while remembering the qualities of the car.

The ad text is laughable, “when you’ve hit the heights in the hottest cat of all you won’t want to come down.” With the headline reading “Hot cat on a tin roof”, with a pic of the car on top of a building, and a night cityscape behind.

The writer is on the money describing the 205 as a “study car, just one that would embark on its own weight loss programme”. I have a shelf at home to back this up - full of plastic stuff that has fallen off the dash :)

Love the comment that “Peugeot could jack in the whole car business and go into washing machines, and people would still claim the new PL909 Spin-o-matique ‘lacked the immediate responses and lively feedback of the 205GTI.’” head_ban

The 205 is famed for lift off oversteer and the odd spin. Just wondering if any of you guys have had any *exciting* moments with this, because I am obviously not pushing it enough tongue

welcome 2 the forum Paul....i ve got a 205 myself
and 2 tell u the truth i havent really had many scary moments in it....i dont really thrash my gti...more like drive it hard...but mostly under 4500rpm...i think the car is pretty hard to loose if you r a competant driver....and more often than not the 205 will take u through the corner even after u ve maybe realised u r going 2 fast...its surprised me many times(no loss of traction) but than again i never lift off in mid corner unless i m cruising...still one of the greatest handling cars on the planet....if in doubt (re cornering) just floor it....the 205 should be able to take care of the rest...

cheers

enjoy the forum...

Hi Chenep, and while I am de-lurking myself hi everybody else too.

Yep I have had a couple of fantastic lift off oversteer moments in my 91 205GTI, none better than at Winton earlier this year. I also have a MkII RS2000 Escort, which explains the nick, and the Pug is my first ever front drive car, so I am still coming to terms with it. I have learned not to even contemplate trail-braking in it blush

Anyway, my first drive at Winton (on street tyres snail ) on my second flying lap, I was coming out of the sweeper a lot quicker than on my first lap and I was not sure if I could carry that extra speed through the little right hand kink before the hairpin, <img src="http://www.racetime.com.au/images/tracks/winton.png" alt=" - " /> so I backed off to about 40% throttle, not even a full lift off, at about 110km/h. The back stepped out in a big way, and I did not expect it while I still had some throttle on, so I catch it but over correct it, repeat 3 times, then realise that while I have been tankslapping along I am going to run out of track and/or talent. At this point I concede defeat and jump on the 2 pedals on the left. So yes, they can bite :D

While I am de-luking, I hope to see you all at DECA evil

Yeah, you got me XTC206 - it feels good to have a Megane power past you, taking photos dance

I did pretty well - appearing (starring wink ) in a good number of the shots - not bad for someone who was back home for midday :D

BTW who drives the "Pugnacious" 205 - are where can you get a dimma kit like that?

RS2000, track stuff sounds fun head_ban I guess thats what I'll have to get into, to really feel the *limit*.

Hahah, it's even more fun taking photos, body hanging out of the side windows as Derek zooms from corner to corner! :)

Hi Paul, welcome to the board.

205 - lift off oversteer, oh yeah. With my new suspension setup it's much more stable and less of a problem - but it's still there, just waiting at a higher limit..

Give me a ring sometime and I'll give you a demo :)

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve - you better believe I'm gonna take you up on the offer head_ban

I finish uni for good in 4 weeks dance but until then my life is hardly worth living cry

After that its a real job and a *fast* pug cheers!

Must have been too busy trying to keep up with the L plate 206CC... tongue
:) The 206GTi has much much less step off oversteer, but you can still get the back to come around when cornering hard ... first time it happend you go "what the f....?" :D

Earlier this year, I invited Owen Wuillemin to take me for a few laps around Wakefield in my race spec. 205. After a few laps of scrubbing in some new tyres, he turned up the heat and got stuck into it. As we exited turn 3, flat biscuit in 3rd gear at approx. 120km/h, lining up turn 4, Owen turned to me and said, "Man, this is a good thing". Next thing I know we're facing the wrong way on the grass, in a smoke/dust storm. All it took was a micro lapse in concentration.
