It seems I could be going to Europe with the family around July, and will be wanting to hire a car in England for around 3 days, and in France for between 3-5 days.

Have been looking at Avis and their prices don't seem too bad, for instance, in France I can hire a Renault Megane 1.6L 5door hatch for 3 days $AU141 5 days being $AU286.

I don't think we'd need something like a Leguna, although I'm not too sure how big a Megane hatchback is....

In London it seems the 406 sedan is Avis' cheapest 4 door car (appart from a 1.6L Astra). The 406 is actually cheaper than a 2L Vectra. What engine would this 406 have? Is $AU253 for 3 days

if anyone can suggest cheaper places to hire cars in either France (am looking around a place called Bergerac - Family has a house there) or London please let me know.

thanks all!

:)

The Megane hatchback is about the size of a Ford Laser or Mazda Astina.

I think the smallest 406 they have in the UK is a 1.8 litre petrol, although one can get a 1.6 litre 406 in Singapore (don't ask. Just don't ask). Incidentally, I found out that there was a 1.4 litre 405 for sale in France back in 1989...

I hired a car in New Zealand recently and found it much cheaper to deal directly with the hire company in the country you will be hiring in. A search on the web should give you any number of hire companies. Yahoo.com.uk would be a good place to start.
Citroen, Renault and Peugeot all have hire schemes, although these may be aimed at longer tem hires. You might find info or links on their web sites.

The leasing companies are:

Peugeot: <a href="http://www.driveaway.com.au" target="_blank">http://www.driveaway.com.au</a>
Renault: <a href="http://www.renault-eurodrive.com" target="_blank">http://www.renault-eurodrive.com</a>
Citroen: <a href="http://www.citroen.com.au" target="_blank">http://www.citroen.com.au</a>

The leasing is for 17 days minimum.

For London, try Blue Wheels
<a href="http://www.bluewheels.com" target="_blank">www.bluewheels.com</a>

They shop the best rates with local rental companies and organise the reservations for you.

...and they even have a 607 logo on their home page!

Cheers

....or if you were interested in renting an A-class Merc or a Smart in London or Paris (amongst other places), you could try <a href="http://www.easyrentacar.com" target="_blank">www.easyrentacar.com</a> (part of the easyJet group)

I was in 2000, and leased through Eurodrive...service was great and when I managed to rip off the front suspension of the Clio in the first hour and a half on the road everything they said happen actually happened and I had another car within 24 hours.

Which leads me to the point. The large Reanult depot in Perpignan also had a rental desk "Renault Relais". I didn't have to pay because the insurance picked up the tab but I was given to understand that the rates were good. I assume that rental is part and parcel of larger depots around France.

I belive the smallest engine in a 406 here is a 1.6.

As for a Renault Megane, it's about the same size as a 307.

If you're driving anywhere near the centre of London, I would suggest the smallest possible car that you can get your luggage & family into, as parking space is rediculous there! Don't be suprised to pay £25 - £40 per day for parking (AUS£50 - AUS$80).

As for what type of car you would hire, I would guess that a 406 would be a 1.8 or 2.0.
