Does anybody have any suggestions as far electronic ignition goes for a 504? What make, specialists, etc.

Retain the points and buy a points triggered M&W CDI from http://www.mwignitions.com/. Aussie made and cheap at around $120 +GST.

If you can solder, Jaycar make a kit one which seems adequate (points triggered or Hall if you're keen.)

$50 but you build it yourself. :)

This topic is also being discussed here:

cheers!

Electronic ignition from the early 505's which used the same motor as the 504 is a possibility to, but would be best sourced second hand. I enquired at Repco about buying the OEM Bosch stuff to convert my 504 to a 505 system but quickly lost interest when I was quoted some obscene prices, such as $400 for the ignition module, over $100 for the coil, can't remember how much the dizzy was, but the whole package was looking like costing the best part of a grand, which is not much less than I paid for the car.

But determined to upgrade from the standard points system which requires constant maintenance and gives a relatively feeble spark, I persevered and went back to a Jaycar kit which I purchased a few years ago but could never get working properly. I eventually figured out what appears to be wrong with the kit and have posted details on the thread linked from my post above. The system I've installed still makes use of points, but they now only feed the Jaycar ignition module rather than the coil, so they should last a lot longer, though it's still too early to say exactly how much longer.

That's funny. I find the 504/505 points system needs very little maintenance. The main time I need to adjust the points is 1000km or so after fitting the points because the rubbing block "wears in" at first. After that I go tens of thousands of kms without touching them, and up to 100,000km or more without replacing them.

It's only really in the winter months where I begin to notice any change in tuning, due to slow cold starts. Apart from that my engines seem to run fine even when the points are worn and half closed. I guess if I was living in a colder climate I might have more trouble on winter mornings. I guess damper climates would cause more ignition troubles also.

I used to have a little bit of trouble every now and then before I fitted a new distributor, because the shaft on the old distributor floated around alot. At one stage, I also had alot of trouble with blowing condensors every few weeks, when I tried one of those newer types of coils. Obviously the standard capacitance of the Ducellier condensors is not correct for that type of coil. I didn't bother trying other condensors. I just went back to a conventional coil and all was fine again.

I quite like the idea of electronic ignition, but I just haven't had any incentive to fit one, because my points don't give any trouble.
