Hi Guys,

I ended up cutting the driveshaft intermediate bearing off with an
angle grinder and driving the retaining shrink ring down the
driveshaft.

To get the new bearing and ring on without a piece of
pipe that is the correct size/diameter I just used two pieces of angle iron of
equal length against the back of the shrink ring and pressed the home
with the press (for some reason the angle iron didn't just fly off).

The outer joint should just pop off with a couple of whacks from a
heavy hammer .... No nothing could remove that (trust me I tried ...
for quite some time). So I decided to try
a 3legged puller on the star at the other end of the driveshaft. I
realised quickly the only thing using the puller was going to acheive
was one wrecked puller. About then I realised the star would fit
through shelf on the hydraulic press. So I pressed it off (it
released with a loud crack).

New boot and grease went on the outer joint very easily, so I
installed the inner joint boot and drove the star back on with a heavy
hammer. Then I greased and tied the inner boot on... Yes !!! One
driveshaft down.

As the star was simple(ish) to push off with the press I pressed the
star off the other driveshaft(not wanting to repeat the frustration
and effort of trying to pop the outer joint off), whipped both the old boots off, cleaned
the joints, fitted the outer joint boot and tied it on. drove the
star back on fitted the circlips around the star, grabbed the inner
joint filled it with grease and sat in on ............ $@!$%@#$%#^@#$^
Guess who hadn't fitted the 2nd boot to the shaft before fitting the
star :( .... off with the circlips again, press the star back
off, fit the inner boot, drive the star back on, go to tie off the
boot and realise the outer joint feels all gravely and there something
wrong .... I don't believe it .... the outer joint has FALLEN off on
this driveshaft while I was driving the star on. Removed the outer boot,
installed the outer joint back onto the shaft, refitted the outer
boot. Tried to fit the inner boot ............
#@$%@#$%@#^$%^#%^@#$!@#$!@#$% The bloody boot didn't fit !!!!!
Arrrrhhhhh... After trying to get it to fit for 20minutes my hands
were so sore I couldn't even hold the driveshaft (from trying to pull
the boot up and over the lip on the joint).

About then I'd had enough so I walked inside to be abused by SWMBO as
apparantly I'd been having, er, "heated discussions" with the
driveshaft that she could here in the house  ...

What fun... I'm looking forward to pulling the boot back off :(

How did you get the short (LHS) driveaxle out of the diff ?

I've had horror scenarios myself simply removing this axle (the inner tri-joint cup that is) from the diff. Every time I told about the horrors - I got new horror stories back from other CX owners - on that same LHS shaft problem

So how is YOUR horror tale on this shaft
- you have been there before doing it up ? :roflmao:

.

LOL :D Sometimes these things need to be reminded of who is boss - I find a bit of well placed abuse is just what the buggers need sometimes. At the very least, it vents frustration....

Hi Anders,

Yep been there and done that. I intended to make up a slide hammer for this job. Now if that joint doen't easily fall out of the diff I split the driveshaft and leave the other part of the joint in the diff.

Once the engine & gearbox is out it's easy to dislodge the joint from the diff with a few well aimed blows using a heavy hammer.

You see the idea is to shock the retaining ring closed allowing the joint to pop out of the diff. However people try to "lever" the joint out with pry bars/screwdrivers. All this does is wedge the driveshaft retaining ring in the diff permanantly. The more "levering" force you use as opposed to 'shock/thumps' the worse you will wedge that driveshaft joint in there (trust me I've learnt this from experiace).
