Just wondering if anaybody has upgraded their speakers and/or headunits in their Clio?

I don't need fantastic sound/volume, just want a better sound then the factory speakers, but seems that the car has a tweeter/woofer for the front, and most split system speaker packages would be underpowered from the headunit, which I think is 4x15W or 4x18W or 4x21W (no solid info).

And I don't if any headunit are compatible with the display/steering wheel controls...

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

I have been wanting to but have not upgraded yet.

Rear speakers are 4" but apparently can fit 6x9's if you are willing to do a bit of cutting.
Fronts are 5.25" splits as standard and can accommodate 6.5" with

The following has been pasted from the Cliosport forums FAQ

Q. What are the speaker sizes in my clio?

A. Pre-98 Clio's use 4"/10cm 2way speakers or tweeters in the dash, 5.25"/13cm speakers in the door, 10cm Speakers in the back.
Post-98 Clio's use 5.25"/13cm components front and back.

Q. How can I retain my display and stalk controls?

Sony
www.autoleads.co.uk do adapters for the stalk but none for the display, currently trying to get one for stalk and display that works, ripspeed sell them for £30 but you have to remove your dash to fit it.

www.connects2.co.uk do adapters for the stalk and display, the only lead that works with the display, ripspeed sell them for £60. Normally have to be ordered in, also the easiest to fit. No removing dash, it simply uses the Remote Port, Power & CD Changer Controls.

www.audiolinx.co.uk do adapters for the stalk and display, ive never heard anything about them but http://www.incardiscount.co.uk stock them for £60.

Kenwood
www.justkenwood.co.uk stock the adapter for the stalk control only, very much alike the autoleads one for fitment and controls.

Alpine
www.mcs-direct.co.uk stock the adapter for the stalk control only, Its under Alpine|Accessories, in 2 parts. You need the control unit and a interface, cheaper then ordering it from Halfords. Again fitment is like the Kenwood and Autoleads Sony adapters. Shame alpine only offer stalk control only.

Blaupunkt

www.bluespot.co.uk stock the adapter for the stalk control only, no display. £44 and fits like the Alpine, Kenwood & Sony Autoleads ones.

Hi Killer toad,

Thanks for the info. But wow, 60 pounds for a lead, that's a bit steep...
I know that Renault UK offers Sony MP3 head units as an accessory, so some how Sony should fit as well?
Also, can't remember where I got the idea from (probably read it somewhere), but I *think* the outside temp shown on the display is driven by the headunit, so unless the new head unit supports that, does that mean we would loose temp display??

Hmm...I think I might stick to speaker upgrade only...sounds like a costly option if I want to upgrade the headunit also.

Hi rc968,

The high cost of the lead/connector/adaptor is probably the only thing holding me back so far. I will most likely just upgrade the speakers (hopefully before Christmas).

Instead of a new headunit I have been thinking about fitting an RCA adaptor to the CD changer and hooking up my iPod. Just have to get off my ass and do some research.

Re: the outside temp

I am not sure about whether it is dependant on the head unit. Here is my 2 cents. I think the temperature sensor is located on the side mirror (passenger side). There is a small nipple thingy on the bottom of the mirror. It could be this. Like you, I also vaguely recall reading this online somewhere.

Hmm..sounds interesting. Just beware that the CD changer output (and headunit input) is digital signal as I was told, that's why I had to fork out $500 for just a CD changer...(where as $300 normally can get a good changer on sale)

What model is your Clio?

[Edit:addition]
I have always wondered what that nipple thingy below the mirror is...

Outside temp is the nipple on the passenger mirror. My sister's played up the week she first got the car. They fiddled with it an it's never had a problem again.

Forget about RCA cables. Get yourself an iTrip, or even better a CCrane FM Transmitter: http://www.ccrane.com/fm_transmitter.asp

I have used one of the CCrane devices in my car with my 10GB iPod for a year. Bloody brilliant. MY4 has used it in his RS Clio and been very very happy with it. They're not available in Australia - give them a call in California and ask to speak to Robbie - he deals with international sales.
