Hi all,

a mate who has a 2CV in the UK (aussie working abroad) has just bought an immaculate R18
Mark 2 in red with very low miles.
Its near immaculate as the photots attached show.
Is anyone interested in such a thing if it was brought back here as he is thinking of shipping it back.

see photos attached if gib gib can upload them....

Its currently going across France on its first big trip but will be back in the UK in a few weeks.

Surely that has to be worth bringing back - just work out if you could get a better car here for the money, which I doubt. Whats an immacualte one worth here?
I'm still kicking myself I didnt bring home the R21 GTS Savannah (wagon) I drove all over Europe. Bloody great little car. Would have owed me only about $5000 landed.

An immaculate 18, no A/C, even with low k's would surely only be worth in the order of $2.5K max in AUS. For a comparison to the Mk2 18, compare what a virtually mechanically identical Fuego would be worth in immaculate cond in AUS at the moment. Max $3.5K I think the 18 would scale back from that high point?

I would think something like a 5GTT or even more extreme, say a 5 Turbo 2, GTA, or A610 would be more worthwhile to bring back (although the newness may be against some of those models, the A reg 18 would be over 15 years old making mods less likely to be needed).

Mmmm,
I'd like an A610 aswell. The typical going rate for the R5GTT is about 5000pounds based on a quick scan of autotrader.co.uk.
This 18 cost only 5% of that as they are unloved.

There is of course the sentimental value to consider - I know I was very emotional to say goodbye to our faithful steed in Europe. It some how seemed very ungrateful and unappreciative to send it off to what would no doubt have been a short career in England. An R21 of lower spec in the Uk would be driven til it dropped and dumped.
It deserved to have a career traveling around Oz after its epic journey around Europe (Loch ness to Athens and back again!) Deep sigh....

Unfortunately sentimental value is worthless upon subsequent sale of the car.

Best to hang onto the memories of the experience rather than experience reality of having to fix a problem on a car in a country where parts have never been sold.

Not a problem when you friends like Ken at Carrevelle Imports to helpout! I realise that it would probably never have been worth on the market what it cost to bring in, but if its a good car and you intend to keep it and use it, it may well be worth it.

If he really wants to bring a Renault back, bring in a R21 Turbo Quadra - they can be had for around 2000 Quid for a very good one. Bloody amazing car for the money, and give Rex drivers a big shock...

sorry Simon,

I'll rephrase that - the R5GTT is probably worth about 2000 pounds rather than the Ali G versions at 5000 pounds.

Ill look at prices for the 21 quadra - sounds rare though.

To be honest I hate being a wet blanket when it comes to things like this, but it would be wrong to give people the impression that by buying the 18 they could make money on its arrival in AUS. Sure with a car like the 18 on offer, even landed/dutied/complianced, unless you are keeping the car for a long time it is unlikely to be something to make a profit on or pay for the trip.

BTW, I'm no example either when it comes to saving money on cars, or picking what should be right. Both my 4's and the 8 have had money wasted on them in the name of a hobby (so that sort of makes it OK) and all require specialist purveyors of parts, although Renault dealers in AUS have helped obtain parts in the past for all my cars.

I am also not suggesting that money could be made, but if you are a odd car nut (and lets face it, if you're on this forum then you probably are...) you could have yourself a very unique and funky car for relativly little money by doing this.
For R21 Turbo prices, have a look at the R21 Turbo club site in the UK - they have a for sale bulliten board that depresses me (because its all so far away)

I'm with simon on this one....

R18s can be a "nice" (not nice enough to source from the otherside of the planet though) car and this one appears to be in very good condition.....but they are next to worthless in aus, there are still some pretty good ones around....

If it were an imaculate R16TX on the otherhand..... :D

If someone wants it, then bring it back. As people have said its not worth doing it to try and sell it. It would be worth it to have it for a collector or a nice daily driver. If you bring it back... go and fill the boot up with any 2nd and new parts you can get for it. That'll make later repairs a LOT cheaper. Not sure what wheels it has on it but if its got those bloody metric rims like the Australian Fuegos had get a set of R18 13"s or 14"s and put them in the boot too.

You have got to be joking, an immaculate 18 would be lucky to get 1K in oz.
I have owned a couple and they are trez ordinaire.
They are so bland they are often mistaken for geminis.

This is a strange argument, everyone has there own opinion on what they should and should not bring here. Lets face it, we're talking French cars, if people wanted to bring in something for profit they'd be looking at Porsche's and that type of thing, or claped out American convertable found in the US desert. Anyone bringing in old French cars does it because they love there car, purely sentimental, a customer of mine imported a base model 18TL many years ago, (why). I have a private import 15TL, boring as it is with its standard 12 motor but someone imported it. I wouldn't try to discorage anybody from importing anything French, the more the better. A friend of mine is a registered small volume importer and can import anything anyone wants, you should see his collection of worthless cars, he's importing a Citroen H van at the moment and he currently owns about 4 or 5 Borgward Isabellas and the only reason he does it, because he loves them.

I'd have to say I would be interested in buying it at a fair price. I used to have an 18 wagon and loved it.....till the BogBrat wrote it off with me in the front seat.

I reckon 18's were good cars let down by crappy fittings...switches, trims and plastic.

The 18 I had was a great vehicle, drove well, handled well and was more fun than the 20 I was driving before I bought it.
