Washing Astra filters

Can't say, we haven't tried it yet.
It's likely to work, because the filters are not meant to be affected by humidity, since they have to filter all that moist air without falling apart or allowing bacteria to breed.
There's nothing to lose for trying.
The worst that can happen is to have to replace the filter.

I dont Know how true this is, but a guy at work had a Hyundai Excel with A/C
and it smelt horrible, and he was told by an A/C guy that some cars (especially Hyundais) used non-coated aluminum for the evaporator, which is an ideal medium for bacteria to form, and according to the A/C guy a cheap and nasty option.
The evaporator could be cleaned with a lot of effort, but the smell wound return after a short while.
The ideal situation would be to have a coated evaporator, which would not allow the bacteria spores to stick.
I dont know what the evaporator in our French cars are made out of (ive never looked), but it could be a cause, if this is all true.
