Hi,

I'm currently working on a '74 504 I've recently acquired.
I've just changed the gear selector as the old one had a ridiculous amount of play in it.
My question is, should the gear lever be at its home position in the 3rd/4th gear position, and spring back to that position after moving it from the 1st/2nd gear?
If I move mine to the 1st/2nd gear position, it stays there.
I'm sure it is supposed to spring back, but can't work out how.

Cheers,
Evan

You're right - the gear lever should default to neutral between 3rd and 4th. There is supposed to be a spring under the gearbox which attaches to an eyelet on one of the selector levers which facilitates this. I can't remember where the other end of the spring attaches to. Others may know. I've had a number of 504s where the spring has become detached and lost.

Thanks Peter.
I just went and had a look and you are right, there is an eyelet on the small selector lever, and another one on the left side of the tailshaft tube about 15cms away. Must be the right one.
Now to find a spring that fits.
Cheers.
