The 404 has vegetable oil in the diff does the 504 have the same or does it have a mineral based oil? In the service book it recomends, or should I say specifies, Esso gear oil GX 80, What is the equivalant of this in other brands?regards, cane toad.

404 diffs take from memory a 140 sth castrol oil thick like honey.
504 can take a 80/90 in the diff but a 80 grade in gear box... you can also use engine oil in gear box...
regards paul.

So what, all 404's and previous models require vegetable oil, and the 50's mineral oil in the diff? Where all 404 sedan diffs the same, not counting ratios? regards cane toad

cane toad...

The final drive in all Peugeots up to 1966 was a worm drive. Then the utes and wagons had a hypoid diff, with the sedans in the 404 retaining the worm drive.

The worm drive required a vegetable oil for best results.

Now, seriously, what about that tow bar I've got for you?
