My 405 is generating a lot of smoke from engine bay
Appears to be from back of engine and smells like oil
No flames
Please advise

Sounds like you have an oil leak to me. The oil is getting on the exhaust manifold and burning off causing the smoke and burnt smell.

You will need to find where the oil is leaking from.

Notorious 405 problem. Oil leak at rear of engine. Plenty of older stuff in the forum about this.

For a 405, a long way back, to when they were common.

The Aussiefrogs home page has a duckduckgo search box (ie a single site search) . This is an advanced search engine and supports minus signs to rule words out, quotes to join complete phrases and full AND and OR with parentheses. In other words it's a serious system.

One common leak is at the rear of the plastic cam cover, and a common fix is Threebond, but it is a bit of a pain, so search it. I haven't been near a 405 for a long time.
